JTD Exhaust

Has anyone fitted an aftermarket exhaust to their jtd? cuz i think that the standard stilo exhaust looks s**te! The thing is I don't want an exhaust that makes my car sound like a chavvy piece of crap. I've seen a few backboxes for about £180, just wondered if these make much different to the sound?

Re: JTD Exhaust

backboxes will make a difference to the sound depending on which one you buy, it wont sound like a chavvy 1.2 corsa though because it's a diesel.

If it's just looks you're after then just buy them tailpipe bolt on things you see at halfords. only about £20

Re: JTD Exhaust

Diesels with big exhausts tend to sound terrible. The diesel thump thump is amplified and added to a horrible screach from the turbo. To improve the performance of a JTD, I suggest you first de-cat it and look at the mid section, where the pipe is squashed flat as it passes the front subframe.

Re: JTD Exhaust

i have a full cat back (centre cat taken out) on my JTD. you can barley hear it at all, all there is is a nice burble to it, but its very subtle.

made a huge difference to the throttle response and smoothness of the engine though :thumbs

i had it done at longlife exhausts for £330. there are pics of it in the members motors section if you want to have a look.

Has it been through an MOT with that exhaust on
If so, what were the emissions like

I was tempted by a Novitec exhaust 'on the cheap' but might re-consider in the spring - as my exhaust is still the original and must be getting towards the end of its days......

You can completely decat a JTD and it will never fail MOT emissions. They do not test Nox on diesels, only smoke.
You have nothing to worry about with modding a diesel exhaust.

You've confused me on this one

If that's the case then why do manufacturers bother to fit a CAT in the first place ?

Cars have to be built to Euro 4 standard now. Actually every diesel since Euro 2 has a Cat, but because it is too difficult to test NOx on a diesel (due to sensors nor being reliable when covered in soot) it is not part of the UK MOT test. Only the smoke test is carried out.

The same goes for Xenon headlights. It is a manufacturers requirement to fit headlight washers, auto headlight leveling and special lenses to control the beam scatter with Xenons, but these tests, or even a check they are present is not required at MOT time, hence so many dangerous and blindingly bright after market xenons on the roads now.
