| Rattle on start up Does anyone elses stilo rattle occasionally on start up. Im using the standard fiat selena oil and all the levels are ok. The car is fitted with the 1.8 litre petrol engine and has only covered 6500 miles.

| Re: Rattle on start up i had the same prob...fiat remaped the ecu but the prob did't go away... they then told me that one of the lamda sensors may have a problem... i had them replaced and the prob was still there.... then i did the mod and never heard of the prob again....

| Ferrari Fanatic | Mine does the same thing but not in the morning. After it's been left for a while during a day but is still warm, it usually rattles like a diesel for a few seconds but then goes quiet. I guess it's a problem with the oil draining into the sump from the hydraulic tappets. My Ford used to do the same and this was described as normal. I'll get it checked when it gets its next service.

| Re: Rattle on start up I have the 1.2 and sometimes when idling it will go into "diesel mode" otherwise its ok. I dont find the 1.2 16v as smooth as my old 1.2 8v punto which I thought would be the other way around.

Thanks: 0 Trader Rating: (0) | Re: Rattle on start up Mine also used to do that noise and is a 1.8. I told my dealer about it and they diagnosed it as a part to do with the variable valve timing. It is only a small part but a devil of a job to do and is quite a lengthy job. I had this part replaced under warranty ( 3rd year) and it cured the problem. I think they called this part a valve variometer or something like that. Anyhowthe problem is now fixed.

| Ferrari Fanatic | Alfa's have a variator which causes the same symptoms when broke. Good thinking! Cheers,

| Re: Rattle on start up It is the valve timing variator that is at fault, and yes it is a pig to do but it does cure the problem. It is a problem on all 1.8 engines in the Fiat range.

| Re: Rattle on start up I don't know if it's the same but my clutch (and I often feel it on the steering wheel as well) vibrates like a diesel's clutch especially when I fisrt start the engine. I took my car to the dealer, they couldn't find a problem, they asked FIAT about changing the clutch but it was taking them too long to do anything, so I had a fight with them and I'll go to another garage
