Re: the bottom end is going!!1

One thing no one has mentioned but hopefully you have checked, is a knackered crankshaft pulley? They make a pretty awful clatter noise when they break up.
Otherwise you could give these guys a call.

The most common way for a diesel to die is when the turbo oil seal fails and causes very low oil pressure in the engine. Also, small bits of broken turbo impeller can be blown into the cylinder causing a lot of damage.

Please let us know when you find out the cause.

Most commercial vehicle JTD's are actually Pugeot based 2.0 engines.

Another Stilo or alfa 147 would be your best bet.

Re: the bottom end is going!!1

the engine hasnt been opened up and the chances are it wont be so i dont think i will get to know what exactly was the cause. it was taken to a diesel specialist who said from the sound of it the bottom end is knackered and not worth taking apart to investigate further. on the other hand if anyone fancies a drive to my house to give me a second opinion

i am at the moment concentrating on finding an engine for a t reg punto 1.2 8v i just bought for £35. then i can sell this to raise the cash to repair the stilo. also chances are the pioneer satnav/dvd in the car and the sound system will be for sale to again raise the cash to repair.

anyone interested let me know.

i am so gutted this has hapened. it sems with cars i really dont have any luck. should have left it standard and kept my warranty. would probably still be under 36k if you take out the trips for remaps and rolling road days.

thanks for the help guys and enough about what is and isnt crap oil. if your that passionate about it then take it to the LL

Re: the bottom end is going!!1

Sorry to hear of this, Must be annoying but i dont think a remap/induction would make any difference. Just a shame that your engine has let go and you cant pinpoint it.

Cant you reshell the crank and have the crank reground if it is the bottom end. Might just be a case of this maybe but i would maybe get the engine looked at just to make doubley sure.

This might even be able to be done with the engine in situ who knows.

Just coming to all of this and boy do I feel for you Frank - what a fecker

Have you driven through any puddles recently....... worries me that it's too easy to draw water into the engine via an unprotected GSR induction kit which is why I'm working on yet another temporary modification. Yes folks, practice safe wet weather driving and take a GSR condom with you......

Anyhow back to the topic - will put my ear to the ground and see what I can come up with engine wise for you. Lots of stuff turns up in this part of the world but it's getting it to you that would be the issue

@ Dave & Argo -

Castrol oils..... hmmmm. For what its worth I did use castrol a lot in my Lancia days and have had (probably) 10 or 12 twincams from 1.6 to racing 2.1 litres/supercharged/turbocharged etc apart for various jobs/rebuilds etc.

It would be fair to say that in my limited experience you do get a build up of black sludge with certain Castrol oils. But that's only if you do not thoroughly clean out any old oil of a different brand with a thorough flush, in fact on my Volumex Lancias I flushed out the engine twice before changing the oil properly irrespective of which brand of oil was going in.

I am not convinced that in this instance the oil is entirely to blame for the JTD engines apparent demise, but we won't know for sure until it's been taken out - it's idle speculation on all our parts and it doesn't resolve Franks problems.

So - who has a nice shiny new JTD short engine lying around for Frank .... anyone

Not stated directly but within context you've a made a very strong inference that it was your intended statement.

Re: the bottom end is going!!1

no just said even though me an a lot of others in the know on here have said castrol is crap people are still using it.
never said it was the castrol that killed it, read the words on the page, don't make assumptions.
i know how frank drives so wont say it was the oil alone

Stu's stilo died early too just over 50k, guess what oil the dealer always put in that?

OK Dave - let's just agree to differ (at least you've got PNL on your side for a change )

....but none of this is helping Frank get his Stilo back on the road again
