Blue Smoke on Start-up

Morning,

When i started my Stilo yesterday to leave work, and again when i did this morning, if i rev or just dip the throttle i get quite a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust. By the time it's warmed up it's fine, is this anything to worry about?

Engine as you prob know already is a Multijet 16v 150.

Cheers

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

Are you parked on a slope at all?

whenever i start my stilo at home, it points down our drive which is on quite an angle (mines JTD). I sometimes get a bit of smoke out the back of it then but its nothing major

Whenever i start it up when im not parked on a slope, it hardly ever smokes, except when i accelerate.

No i'm on the flat, and it is only if a touch the throttle.

It's also waaay down on power. Probably just running rich at start up i guess?!

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

Doesnt sound good.

Blue smoke = burning oil

Black smoke = over fueling (running rich) as happens when you accelerate hard.

It sounds like you have a leaking valve guide seal. If it is under warranty, tell them you want it fixed. It is quite a complicated job to change them and it will get worse in time.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

could possibly be a broken intercooler hose

i had a broken hose and it was smoking slightly more and lost about 10% of performance, can you hear a hissing noise at all when revving it ?

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

You can always try a different fiat dealer . I did

It should be covered in the first 2 years of the warranty (hopefully), but not in the 3rd when mine went

You can here it from the inside of the car (with no music on), it is quite loud. Just listen for a whooshing/hissing noise when the turbo is on song

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

Why not covered in the 3rd? what happens then?

I'm backing the Leaky valve seal on this one. No hissing or anything today, just a TON of blue smoke at start up. To get the turbo spinning i have to have my foot flat on the floor for at least a second and a half when i first start it!

I thought turbo lag was a thing of the past but even when i'm driving it hard and in the power band there's at least a 1 second delay!

Spoke to local dealer this morning, said they'll get back to me! If i've not heard anything by 4 i'll give them a bell again.

Josh i've got some mates up in Leeds/York so next time i'm visting would be cool if we could compare notes etc!

Cheers

Re: Blue Smoke on Start-up

Well, i'm not losing any oil, well enough so that the dipstick is going down.

If there was excess oil in it'd all burn off stright away right, and wouldnt burn more off the longer you leave it?

If it is the valve seals will it be a lengthy job?

i really dont think this is anything to worry about, just unburnt fuel, iv seen your vid and its not excessive enough to worry, and if your reving when its cold it will, when engines are cold they run rich, the smoke you see is unburnt fuel coming through. in the days of the choke was the same, pull out to run rich, thats what the ecu does when its cold richens the mixture to stop it from stalling.

all diesels are rough when cold, especially this weather, when diesel sets like treacle

worry when it starts doing it warm

these you 1st diesel cars
