Question disconnect ESP?

HY, i have a question: i know that some cars for ex BMW can disconnect they'r ESP by holding longer the ASR button. Can you do something similar to a Stilo?

Even if you can, why would you want to?

Re: disconnect ESP?

We have a peugeot 407 at work, handles really nicely until the ESP kicks in... it ruins the feel of the car.

The Mondeo with out the electronic aides is so much more fun to drive

However, my Punto is off the road at the moment having the back end rebuilt from two crashes. Courtesy car? Subaru Legacy! That handles like it is on rails... don't want to give it back! oh and it has no esp what so ever

Re: disconnect ESP?

that is right. Stilo beeing a FWD and having the ESP kicking in becomes, le me say, not so fun. I have to really use the hand brake i give a lot of throtle to keep it as i whant.but over all it's a great car with or with out the ESP.

PS:Subaru Legacy is AWD car and it handles wonderful...as all Subaru cars.

Re: disconnect ESP?

As I said, ESP cannot be deactivated by itself. Efforts of removing fuses and disconnecting leads will cause a brake node fault, which will log ABS, EBD, ASR and ESP failures, and also render these systems deactivated.

Not worth it from a safety point of view is it?!

Re: disconnect ESP?

The whole ".....I have to really use the hand brake i give a lot of throtle......" is not exactly safe on public roads. However, if you were doing this on private roads or a track then fair enough.
I don't want to sound like a miserable boring git. I like a bit of fun same as the next guy, but the fun stops when you wipe someone else off the road. Also, insurance premiums are so damn high for a reason.

Yep. you are right but i am not doing it on public roads. I do some training as i am at a rally car school tring to get my rally drving permit. so i have a safe road with no cars wher i try this kind of stuff. I have my licence since 2001 and i never had any problems with the police or any accident.I drive very safe, but i whant to thank you for your advice.

Re: disconnect ESP?

fstilo, sounds like you have your answer, so this isn't aimed specifically at you...

... I find that many people have ESP (Stability Control) and ASR (Traction Control) completely confused. Even journalists seem to stuff it up in car reviews!

Most people think that turning off traction control is desirable for performance. Having tested it on a track, I can assure you that it makes no difference (in my Stilo Abarth) - the wheels still spin briefly with ASR on, dry or wet (it rained on and off all day), with ASR off you get a bit more noise and wheelspin, sure, but that doesn't make a jot of difference to the actual acceleration except to perhaps give undesirable torque-steer. I know, because I was trying each time to out-accelerate the same RWD FIAT 125 and each time, I was ahead by the same margin.

Early TC systems could only reduce the engine power to correct wheelspin. The ASR in the Stilo can brake the spinning wheel, sending power to the other wheel. Only if both wheels spin equally does the MSR reduce engine power (Motor Schelppmoment-Regulung, what a lovely term, I would guess this is German for Engine Torque Regulation) I didn't feel any sign of engine power being reduced.

As for ESP, I was wondering what effect this would give. I hoped that it would improve the stability of the car turning into corners while trail-braking, by having the advantage of being able to brake individual wheels (something the driver cannot otherwise do). I also hoped that it would allow more neutral cornering, maximising the grip available. Again, the common wisdom was 'turn that **** off'.

I can now confirm that ESP acts only as a safety net. By the time the ESP intervenes in the Stilo (a distinctive shuddering from the rear of the car), you are already well past the loss of grip from the front, well into ploughing understeer, or you are being ridiculously provocative by jamming on the brakes part way around a corner etc. These situations are NOT conducive to the best lap times - anyone that has driven successfully on the track (and that's not necessarily me) will say that the best performance is obtained from smoothness and control BEFORE major out-of-control understeer or snap-oversteer. Because ESP intervenes only AFTER these dire conditions are met, it is surely safe to say that ESP has no detrimental effect to handling performance.

To put it another way, I had to really throw the Stilo around to get the ESP to intervene, and by that stage I was so far out of line I didn't stand a chance of obtaining a quick lap time. On my fastest laps, the ESP never intervened or even came close to intervening.

If you are trying to drive sideways in a rally situation on loose surfaces, that may be a different scenario.
