How to replace upper glovebox hinge...

What you'll need:
  • ratchet
  • torx bits
  • extension
  • flexi extension
first thing to do is find a new hinge, there hard to find in scrappers because they're mostly all broken. and in dealers there 80....i eventually found one in a scrapper for 20....

then get the old one out...
take the flocked lining in the top glove box out, couple o screws about, easy to find....

get the old hinge out, i tried to undo all the screws, there are 5 in total, 3 in the middle and one on each "hinge" at each end...

i believe they are a torx bit number 30...but ill check and edit accordingly...
put the torx bit on the flexi extension then the extension on the end of that then the ratchet on the end of that (simple eh?)

undo what you can get at, it a TIGHT squeeze u WILL slice and dice your hands...

i undid two screws (top right and middle one, then i ripped out the rest of the hinge and it was much easier to get the other screws out...

i then took a weeks break to let my hands heel (no jokes....)

then i took a few weeks for exams and working up courage, and i decided to try and fit the new one....

offer it up in the "open" orientation...push pull and tug it up into the dash...

you'll find it has allot of movement in it, push it all the way up and the screw holes in the hinge will line up with the holes in the back of the dash.

start with the screw at the top right, put it in finger tight, then get your extended flexi socket bit thing and do it up (will take several attempts and lots of time)

then do the screw right in the middle, same as before, then the top left....thats all i put in cos i found th others FAR to awkward...but it hold just fine......

any Q's or suggestions for the guide, post up and ill fix it...

Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge...

Decided to help out a friend and change a broken hinge assembly on his Stilo cooler box(top glove box) for him.

What a pain in the ass that was. Getting the old one out was hard but getting the new one back in was impossible.

The 5 x T20 torx scews holding it in are unbelievably difficult to get to, due to the passenger side air bag being so close to the hinge assembly.
After using 4 different flexible shaft screw drivers I eventually found one that was small enough to fit in and crack the screws loose. Finished removing them with my fingers. Took me 2 hours, 4 coffee's and a bacon sandwich to remove it.

After a bit of jiggling around I got the new assembly into possition but stuggled for over an hour trying to get just 1 Torx screw back in.

After studying it for a while I decided to replace the T20 Torx screws with similar Hex Key ones to enable me to use a set of Hex Keys instead of a Torx bit. The Hex Keys I have are the type with a ball shape on the end of the long leg of the key. This enabled me to use the Hex Key at an angle when screwing them in. Still the biggest pain in the arse job I've ever done but at least I did it.

I've added a couple of pictures, hope someone finds this usefull. Not me, I'm not doing it again, ever.

I replaced the hinge on a Stilo a few weeks ago. I also replaced the rear bushes on my own Stilo yesterday. If I had to choose which one I'd rather do again it would be the bushes. Getting your hands or tools to those T20 Torx screws is near impossible.

That said if you happen to be near Wolverhampton this week end I'll do what I can to help you get it sorted. If you plan to go it alone mt advice is get a small but good quality flewable screwdirver that will accept a T20 torx bit, I found it quite usefull in reaching those screws.

Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge...

attempted to take this dreaded challenge the last screw all the way on the right (possibly left for you right hand drivers) was rediculous to get off took me all afternoon and then another attempt till midnight. im def gonna look to find replacement screws with allen head instead. the difficulty for me now is to fix this. apparently everything is fine except the two black springs are broken.

will attempt to make my own my taking steel wire of the same diameter. my other question is that i see in some photos other than the two black springs there is a silver one on the side. anyone have any clear pictures of this? i dunno if this was added later on but i cannot see this on mine. i can see that it is connected to one of the hinge pieces that sticks out like a lever but i see no attachment for the other end.

Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge...

Well, here are some pictures, and a walkthrough of my challenge.

For starters, a picture of some nice tools:

Loads of small screws to remove outer cover:

Two torx screws to remove inner lining:

To gain extra acces, this is optional - just to gain extra access when refitting. Here's the summer coke cooler:

Pull out inner lining and vent:

A picture of the vent again:

Praise out the airbag switch:

Remove screw:

Open lower glove box and unscrew two torx screws:

Take out the plastic, just the way you open that particular door (like here, to the right):

To remove the right (or left in the UK) vent, unscrew two screws underneath and one screw to the right:

Pull the vent straight out:

I have no idea how you do this without "Tack-it":

To get to the worst screw:

Completely removed:

Job is worse when you have stuffed the rear of the compartment with other gadgets, as a line converter and a handsfree kit module:

The cracked hinge:

Same part numbers (on both hinge parts), but they aren't identical:

Notice the differences in the springs:

Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge...

I need to get mine replaced, I'm pretty sure I broke it because the panel was not fitted correctly in the first place, and the irritating rubbing noise between panel and dash got right up my exhaust pipe, and smacked it senselessly in a rage after a crap day in work.

There's one on flea bay atm going for 80 off an old Abarth (same car I got my CC stalk from) but to me It's a little steep in price, so am going to wait for however long it takes for one to come on at a reasonable price!
