Posts: 6,081 Thanks: 280 Trader Rating: 7 | Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge... Decided to help out a friend and change a broken hinge assembly on his Stilo cooler box(top glove box) for him. What a pain in the ass that was. Getting the old one out was hard but getting the new one back in was impossible. ![]() The 5 x T20 torx scews holding it in are unbelievably difficult to get to, due to the passenger side air bag being so close to the hinge assembly. After using 4 different flexible shaft screw drivers I eventually found one that was small enough to fit in and crack the screws loose. Finished removing them with my fingers. Took me 2 hours, 4 coffee's and a bacon sandwich to remove it. After a bit of jiggling around I got the new assembly into possition but stuggled for over an hour trying to get just 1 Torx screw back in. After studying it for a while I decided to replace the T20 Torx screws with similar Hex Key ones to enable me to use a set of Hex Keys instead of a Torx bit. The Hex Keys I have are the type with a ball shape on the end of the long leg of the key. This enabled me to use the Hex Key at an angle when screwing them in. Still the biggest pain in the arse job I've ever done but at least I did it.I've added a couple of pictures, hope someone finds this usefull. Not me, I'm not doing it again, ever.

If you plan to go it alone mt advice is get a small but good quality flewable screwdirver that will accept a T20 torx bit, I found it quite usefull in reaching those screws.

For starters, a picture of some nice tools: ![]() Loads of small screws to remove outer cover: ![]() Two torx screws to remove inner lining: ![]() To gain extra acces, this is optional - just to gain extra access when refitting. Here's the summer coke cooler: ![]() Pull out inner lining and vent: ![]() A picture of the vent again: ![]() Praise out the airbag switch: ![]() Remove screw: ![]() Open lower glove box and unscrew two torx screws: ![]() Take out the plastic, just the way you open that particular door (like here, to the right): ![]() To remove the right (or left in the UK) vent, unscrew two screws underneath and one screw to the right: ![]() Pull the vent straight out: ![]() I have no idea how you do this without "Tack-it": ![]() To get to the worst screw: ![]() Completely removed: ![]() Job is worse when you have stuffed the rear of the compartment with other gadgets, as a line converter and a handsfree kit module: ![]() The cracked hinge: ![]() Same part numbers (on both hinge parts), but they aren't identical: ![]() Notice the differences in the springs:

Posts: 41 Thanks: 1 Trader Rating: 0 | Re: How to replace upper glovebox hinge... I need to get mine replaced, I'm pretty sure I broke it because the panel was not fitted correctly in the first place, and the irritating rubbing noise between panel and dash got right up my exhaust pipe, and smacked it senselessly in a rage after a crap day in work. There's one on flea bay atm going for £80 off an old Abarth (same car I got my CC stalk from) but to me It's a little steep in price, so am going to wait for however long it takes for one to come on at a reasonable price!
