Hi all-

Me again. I'm slowly learning more and more about how to work on my 1980 Fiat Spider. The only woe I have right now is that the speedometer/odometer aren't working. I'm ordering a replacement speedometer cable from International Autoparts. Are these easy to install? I should also mention that I have an automatic transmission. Thanks all.

How did you arrive at the fact that the cable was bad?

The replacement of the cable and housing is not really all that bad, just a little time consuming.

The cable is attached at the tail shaft housing and at the speedometer head itself.

Hello-

Thanks for the reply. How did I arrive at the fact that it's a bad cable? It's just a guess. Do you have another idea about what the problem could be? Thanks again.

Just a suggestion before you spend money jack up the back of the car and put the back axle securely on good jack stands, disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission and have somebody sit in the car and run it in first gear and look and see if the gear where the cable pushes into is turning DO NO GET UNDER THE CAR WHILE YOU ARE CHECKING IT!!!!!!

If the gear is moving then disconnect the cable at the speedometer head and run the car again in gear after the cable is hooked back up to the transmission, if the cable does not turn then it's bad, if it does turn then either you do not have it properly attached to the speedo head or the head assembly itself is bad.
