Question Ignition Problem???

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have a 1980 Fiat Spider 2000 and it starts pretty good and runs good but when I turn the key off the car keeps running and I have to pop the clucth to turn it off and the electrical system stays on too. So I have to unhook the battery to keep the electrical system off. Any help would be great!

Thanks,
Taylor

Re: Ignition Problem???

Bad ignition switch or alternator with a bad diode allowing current to flow back into the ignition.

Re: Ignition Problem???

I've been told that the entire electrical system runs thru the ignition switch. My Fiat used to cut out everytime I made a left turn. I could make four right turns and the car would be fine.

I gave the car to a FOREIGN CAR mechanic for 5 months, paid him over $400 and when I drove it out, it died when I made a left turn. I finally found a Fiat dealer and when I made an appointment, the telephone receptionist asked what was the problem. I responded and she said: "Oh, it's the ignition switch." And it was! The receptionist was smarter than a foreign car mechanic. $75 later, it ran like a top.

Problem is that the ignition switch is the weakest link in the electrical system. I have a 1981 Spyder w/ 40K miles and have replaced the swith 3 times. It's now dead again.

Good luck w/yours.

Re: Ignition Problem???

Would seem like a good candidate for fitting an after market ignition relay.

Dave.
