1979 Spider 2000

I bought a project car. I set the timing mark on the crankshaft at 5 degrees past tdc. Made sure the timing marks on the timing belt sprockets were lined up with their marks and verified that the number 4 piston was at tdc. I then pulled the distributor out because the rotor was set to fire at the number 1 cylinder and reset it to fire at the number 4 cylinder just as my book instructed.

I still can't get it to start, and it backfires through the carburator.

It has an electronic ignition. Can anyone give me an idea of how to get the timing set correctly, or if you have any other ideas I might try.

Thanks,

John Barnes

What makes you think the distributor was wrong, ie 180 degrees out? Did you try and start it before you changed things?

If the engine spits back through the carby on start up you have got the Disy in 180 Deg out, by the way you set the timing marks up so that your on TDC & both the Cam wheels are at the cam box timing marks, then refit the disy in to fire No.4.

It is a easy mistake to make.
