Timing belt drive cog.......

My engine turns over and the harmonic balance pulley turns, but not the timing belt (1796cc 124 Spyder). It appears to be the failure of a 'key' holding the timing belt drive cog to the drive shaft, but I haven't got the H-B pulley removed yet. Which way is rotation for the large nut on the H-B pulley to be removed, clock-wise or other? When I get that pulley off, I can check to see if my guess is correct.

If I am correct about the sheared key, I am thinking that all I have to do is line up the drive shaft keyslot and cog, insert a new key, and I should still be in time since the cams and distributor didn't move. Am I thinking correctly?

the crank shaft pulley nut is a normal direction thread. counter clockwise to remove.

if the crank has been turning, chances of it aligning properly with the cams and auxiliary shaft are very low. I'd quadruple check all the alignments of the cams, aux shaft and crankshaft.

Thanks for the reply Mike. Just for information for anyone reading this thread it was a stripped timing belt, only the teeth I could not see. A new belt and timing set-up and all is fine!

good to know that was the only damage. coulda been much worse.
