'77 Fiat 124 carburetor troubles..

Hello everyone,

I am new to this list and I have a question about an old school Fiat. I am working on my buddies 1977 Fiat 124 Spyder with the 1.8 DOHC motor. The problem began when he broke the timing belt at a low speed and since it was an interference motor the valves were bent, pistons dented, etc. I told him the best thing to do would be to totally rebuild the motor. Thats what we did, honed the bores, new pistons, rings, bearings etc. The head was totally redone as well. We reassembled the car set the gear timing perfect and the ignition timing close, we dumped fuel into the carburetor and it fired right up and ran then died as soon as the fuel in the carburetor ran out. We filled up the tank with some 93 octane and changed the fuel filter. The car still did the same thing. When the car would run the carburetor made a wierd sucking noise. Well I figured out that for some reason if you put a rag over the primary barrel on the carb where the air door is, the car would actually run perfectly. If you restricted the air enough it would run perfectly. As soon as the rag is removed it would die. I figured that the carburetor needed a rebuild or the fuel pump was not supplying enough fuel. Keep in mind this car ran perfect before it was taken apart, but I figured from sitting for approximately a year something might have happened to the fuel, gumming up the carb or something like that. We rebuilt the carburetor with a kit. The car still ran the same. The old fuel pump seemed to pump perfectly but we installed a new pump to make sure. Still runs the same. I am wondering if one of the hoses on the carburetor is hooked up wrong but I tried switching a few just to see if that helped but they all seemed to be correct. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong or a schematic/diagram for this carburetor which I believe is a Weber model 32dhsa? Thanks in advance for any help!

Check for a severe vacumm leak, either a hose is off or misrouted, or something went wrong when installing the intake manifold and gasket.
