PMSL!!!!!!!!! (oops, txt spk!)

And not only that, but the King and Queen of Chavdom, David and Victoria Beckham, were voted the most pointless celebrities on a TV programme last night, along with Jade from Big Brother and mega boobs Jordan.

Who will all the Chavs aspire to now that their heroes have been ridiculed?!!!

I think if we are going to complain about the standard of responses on here at least the complainants should check their own English, it does make a mockery of what they are complaining about.
And to be honest I do not find that 'text speak' is any problem on the forum other than when people give examples when taking the piss.

Eg:-

'lnk cr b82rez 2g4, i ws trin sav t1me!'

'Y u thnk i no spk in txt? i iz kewl, n ne way, i cn spk n rite sum txt, tho only on mob fons innit?'

I do agree that there is an irony when people who complain about writing standards write incorrectly themselves! BUT, the problem with text speak is that not everyone understands it. Plus, there are quite a number of foreign members on the forum and it makes no sense to them at all. Shouldn't we be a bit more considerate to those who use the forum and aren't familiar with text speak?

Text speak is one of my pet hates. It's very very irritating.

I hate text speak as well - and the funny thing is, with predictive text on most phones nowadays, it is actually out-dated - surely it is quicker to type it out properly

Re: No Text Speak

while 'txt spk' annoys us english folk we really shouldn't forget about the members to who english is not their first language, those poor buggers dont have a clue whats going on when 'txt spk' is used, especially in the car sections.

Re: No Text Speak

Ok, reading this thread and I have to agree with you in some cases but not in others, fact is "Txt spk" as you guys have been calling it comes in two forms bad and worse!

Bad: (This is exceptable and doesnt bother me the slightest)
Hey how r u, r u comin out tonight or staying in?

Worse: (This is strickly nasty and should never be used on a forum )
Wht u doin, u wna cum out 2nite or styin in?

Im sure there are even more ways of shorting that text down but I think the top one is ok as I just read past it without even noticing, but the lower one takes abit more effort. I also think that common phrases such as "lol" are so widely used on the forum I think we have all used it..

As for a filter its quite simple really, in most BBoards there is a filter in the admin panal and have "lol" changed to "haha" for example.

Re: No Text Speak

It should be banned everywhere, the language skills of kids leaving school is bad enough so we don't need a new way to confuse them even more

Its not about being quick, its about cramming as many words into one text as possible.

Don't you find it a pain when you have to pay for 2 texts when you go one letter over?

This is when re-writing a word often comes in handy

e.g

Ok well I will see you tomorrow
Ok well I will c u 2mrw
k wel Il c u 2mrw

I could fit 2 messages if I used msgs instead of the full word

What about typing with accent?

eg:

I have broken 'my' car

to

I've broken 'me' car

Is this acceptable? I like typed accents, makes me smile more

Not at all - I either make it fit onto 1, or do mega texts that last 2 or 3 pages

'Txt Spk' on mobile phone messages are fine. As you said, you can cram all the info into one message instead of paying for two. BUT, a text message goes to one person or maybe a few more, and when you send one you KNOW that the person(s) you are sending it to will understand it.

On a forum however, you don't know who or how many people are going to read what you write, let alone if anyone will understand it if it is written in text speak. That in my book is when it becomes unacceptable.

I mean, supposing if people started writing in French or German on here. How would those that don't speak or understand those languages feel? Probably p**sed off! They'd then start complaining that messages should be in English as this is the language that most people use here, so that everyone can understand.

As for 'accents', well, that's up to the person writing it. Writing 'me' instead of 'my' (as in "look at me car") is really just incorrect use of English. Put it through an online translator and the end result will make no sense in another language.

In actual fact, the above is more writing phonetically than with an accent. Another example is "Yo peeps, hows y'all doin'?" When it gets taken to this level it becomes just as unintelligable as text speak for those that aren't familiar with the 'accent'.

On top of that, if everyone started writing with 'accents' we'll end up with such fragmented English standards that only those from a particular region of the country or from other communities will understand certain accents.

That's the reason why we are taught English standards. To have everyone write in an accepted way so that every English speaking person who reads a message can understand it. That, surely, is the whole point of posting messages on a forum...

Hehe if only, sometimes I've sent what seems like a reasonable txt spk text message and recieved a reply with a simple, "What?"
