Hey all,

I am new to this forum, so please excuse me if this has already been suggested.

I thought it would be a good idea to implement sub forums for engine types inside the forum for each model.

For example, in the 500 section, we could then have a sub forum for the TA engine, Fire engine, etc. If you look on Wikipedia, there is eleven engines listed for this car alone!

I think doing this will help people find what they are looking for much easier, rather than having a 500 section on its own, then having to trawl through hundreds of threads that are unrelated to your driveline.

Again, sorry if this has been implemented already and I have missed it, or if it has been suggested in the past and rejected.

Another forum I am on, whirlpool.net, has a section for android phones. Within that section, you can see every post about every android phone there is. If you don't want to see all of them, there is a drop down bar that let's you select a certain manufacturer, such as Samsung or HTC.
I was thinking of something similar to this. Here's a link http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/140 at the top is the drop down bar I am talking about.

Yes but they dont split phones by processor?

See an issue?

I was only using it as an example of what can be done and how it can be implemented.

No. If you go to the automotive section of that very same forum, there is 23 subsections, so eleven is manageable.
Rather than listing all eleven drivetrains, you could list six of the main ones, and for those that don't know what drivetrain they have, or for those that have a 'not so popular' drivetrain, there could be an 'unspecified' option.

It's just simply an idea to make the forum easier to navigate, because, as I mentioned above, trawling through pages of threads about unrelated drivetrains can get annoying.

this would just end in a mess, it being sorted like you suggest would rely to heavily on people posting actually knowing something about their engine. In my experience alot of people struggle with posting in the relevant car section - If they don't know the difference between models of fiats do you really think they would know what engine they have.
In the cento section we are asking which engine people have and explaining the differences between them almost daily. Problem as i see it is people don't want to take the time to read or learn anything, they just want answers straight away

Right so i have a problem with my 500 engine(at least I think its the engine as i dont know yet)
where do i post?
I dont know what engine it is,So i post in the 500 section
does tha post get moved to the correct engine section once clarified?
or left in the 500 section where all the 500 owners are?

this would just end in a mess,
I don't see how. If you're not sure what engine you have, as above, you would post in the 'unspecified' section.
If you are concerned about the format being a mess, then I don't think that argument is relevant either. If you look at the whirlpool forum, (I know I keep refering to this forum, but it's good to use as an example), everything is still pooled together, there's just an extra column down the side that you can use as an index.

it being sorted like you suggest would rely to heavily on people posting actually knowing something about their engine.
As above, everything would still be pooled into the same forum, so if you don't know what engine you have, then you can still brows every thread under the '500' section.

Post it in the 'unspecified' section then.

they just want answers straight away
And this makes it easier to find the answer, provided they know what to look for.

You still post it in the 500 section, just under the 'unspecified' index.

Totally up to the mods. You could still leave it under the 'unspecified' section.

It would still be visible in the 500 section. Everything would be, regardless of engine spec. It is simply another way of indexing threads.

I honestly don't understand why this is so difficult to grasp. If you actually look at that other forum, you would see exactly what I am talking about. In the Android phones section, for example, everything is pooled together. Then, if you want to see Samsung only threads, you simply select Samsung and that is all that's shown.
If you own an Android phone, but are posting about software issue's unrelated to the manufacturer, then you don't specify a sub section and your thread is still there for everyone who visits the Android forum to see.

All I am suggesting is a way to index threads a little easier for when you are searching for something. It doesn't just have to be engine specific. You could also have an electrical index, brake index, etc.

Again, everything will still appear under the same 500 forum. If you want to view a specific section, you can.
I noticed that there already is prefix filtering, (general, technical, styling, tuning off-topic) so this has already been implemented in some way, that would simply be expanded to include engines.

i think we can all grasp what your saying just fine, just don't really agree is all.

Some of the questions the other guys were posting leads me to believe otherwise.
I don't understand what there is to disagree on though. I thought anything that makes the site easier to navigate would be something everyone would want.

The site already has a way to index threads, so this would only be expanding on that. To the people that don't want to use it, nothing changes.

All I can think of is pro's, no con's.

Anyway, Iv'e given my opinion. I just thought I would put it out there.

How is the site currently difficult to navigate?

It is difficult if you want to find an engine specific thread, or anything specific for that matter. You could use the search function, but that doesn't, and hasn't, always bring up every relevant thread.

I'm going leave this now, as it's clearly never going to happen, so I don't see any point discussing it further.

Half the time it's difficult to search for what you want as people haven't used the correct description in the first place, and as 90% of first time posters don't seem to know what engine they've got then they're going to pick something like misc anyway.

Unfortunately it'll always be the case, I've found the search system to be fine, just have to take your time that's all.

I'll just jump in here before this gets too silly.

The Whirlpool forum is basically using the equivalent of "Prefixes" on their threads. We use them on here but in the method of "General" "Technical" or "Styling".

Unfortunately there is no way to allow 2 prefixes per thread, so we couldn't do this even if it was voted in...

Sorry!
