Post Make it easier to register

Here's a proposal that might increase the membership of the forum.

Redesign the registration page so that all necessary data entry fields are shown above the "re-captcha" anti-bot word guessing box.

The recaptcha tool is ambiguous (is it necessary to leave a space between the two words, for example?), so users don't always trust that their answers are correct. Consequently when the registration fails it is easy to blame this and waste a good 10 minutes or so punching a variety of weird and wonderful words into the box before you realise that the error message actually relates to a whole load of other stuff you haven't filled in yet, off the bottom of the screen.

This is a tad irritating and I wonder how many people simply give up, thinking that the rather awkward security system won't let them in, when it's actually because the form is the wrong way round.

Re: Make it easier to register

Its a pretty generic registration form from what i can tell..

i use a similar one on 2 forums that i operate and we use the CAPTCHA system too..

its pretty much either this, or an emailed password authetication.. these are the only real solutions to stop "bots" and spam

i think this system is pretty easy, it takes 5minutes if that to register

if you cant make out the words, then you can get your computer to "speak" it or change the image.

EDIT;
Certain "Anti-Bot" systems come built into forums, you cant really edit the security protocols as the come as a package, but thats with phpBB which we use, not to sure about system FiatForum uses...

Re: Make it easier to register

I think you're missing the point here. There's nothing wrong with the process, it's the presentation. If you fill in the Captcha box and hit return, and don't get through, it's logical to assume that you've failed its test. In actual fact you've failed because there's another half page of information to add before you complete the Captcha box and press return. For this reason I'd suggest putting it at the bottom of the page where no-one can get confused.

It's all very well saying "yeah but it works ok" when you're already a member. You don't know how many people aren't on here because of it, because, err.... they can't get in to tell you they can't get in.

We need it because even with that we get spambots and spam.

Re: Make it easier to register

Right, i get what you mean now..

The problem with this is that the CAPTCHA is part of the User Registation, the other parts are "additional info"

the CAPTCHA cant be moved to the bottom without moving the "user registation" to the bottom either..

one solution would be to move the "additional info" to another page or to first log in..

On phpBB we dont ask for additional info, but you can fill it out on the userCP when required.. not too sure regarding the software that FiatForum uses...

Re: Make it easier to register

dont remember having trouble myself but i see where you're coming from. maybe with larger screens the extra info is not hidden off the bottom of the screen until you scroll down or something.

either way, youre on now mate so welcome & enjoy the forum!

Re: Make it easier to register

Don't want to start a new thread because it's not really worth it but earlier this afternoon I wanted to log in and as I've not used this site, or had any mindboggling issues with my car for months I'd forgotten my password. I bought a new pc last year and must have forgot to make a note of the password. Couldn't even remember my username, had to do a search to try and find that, it killed a few minutes lets say.

But when I tried to recover my password each time the CAPTCHA system through up totally unrecognisable words, some weren't even words. Then when I eventually found something legible I got "The string you entered for the image verification did not match what was displayed", I typed exactly as I saw them.

In the end I used to contact us section as I couldn't get anywhere with anything.

Just noticed something must have worked as I have an email saying my password was reset, even though I always got that message.

Anyway, surely there's a better system that the CAPTCHA one that is used, I'm sure the words aren't that bad on some other sites, or least they didn't use to be.

Re: Make it easier to register

I've not tried the speak versions, did consider it yesterday, not sure what it would come out with though given most words are just a string or random letters (grouped together using the worst possible font, in bold).

Why when technology is so advanced do we end up with something that just simply doesn't work.

Oh and as for the opening poster - love that username, I used to use it myself quite a few years ago, mainly as a team name in quizzes and such like.

Re: Make it easier to register

Captcha is the devils spawn, surely there are better ways - perhaps with the drag n drop questions - which of these is a dog etc.

As for the comment
Quote Quote:

- what sort of way is that to welcome new members.
If someone new to using forums cannot even get on then how are they going to learn to use them in the first place? By all means included some spambot prevention but IMO it should be made clear and easy to register with all sites and the suggestion was not one removing anything, just rearranging it so it is clearer to the new user.
