Just joined the forum as I have bought an SX4 1.9 diesel on 08 plate with 92k miles. (Iknow...........)
Checking around it, as you do, I checked the oil but found it impossible to get an accurate reading. Every time I pulled the dipstick out it was coated in oil for about the first 3 inches.

I'm sure it hasn't got that much in it, but I'm not 100% confident the level is right.
Is this normal.
My old Octavia had a black dipstick and you needed a torch or a magnifying glass to see black diesel oil on a black stick.
My last car was a Toyota Avensis and I have to say, the SX4 drives so much better. The toyota was quiet and comfortable, but was like driving a tank.

Hi,:)
I would insert the dipstick in ALMOST all the way, then remove and see how much is on the bottom of the stick,
Eg. - if you leave it @3 inches SHORT of full insertion and get just a dab of oil on the tip, then the dispstick is giving a true reflection of the level..,

Hi and welcome to the forum

I have a 2007 Fiat Sedici 1.9 Multijet. Had it 3 years and love it.

I to was having the oil level problem just as you explained it.

I think the design is the problem here as the tube is to narrow for the dip stick and after the engine has been running oil is kept up the tube by the dip stick.

I found out that if you remove the dip stick and wait 20 to 30 minutes the oil drains out of the tube and when you dip it you'll find the level. I even have a little hook I put up next to my car to hang the dip stick on while the oil drains back down the tube. ( I know it's sad isn't it )

I've been doing this method now all the time I've had the car and it does not move off the max mark at all.

I will say though that a good 5w 40 fully synthetic oil is good in these engines as they have a DPF fitted and would recommend an oil change every 5000 / 6000 miles for trouble free motoring.

And a good run every week or so to keep the regeneration's going in the DPF.

Any way I hope this helps and I'm sure you'll be pleased with your Sx4

Kind Regards Stephen.

Thanks Stephen, that makes sense to me.
I'm surprised at the long oil service intervals on Fiats, I thought only VAG/BMW followed that line. I'm not a fan of extended service intervals and will be changing my oil rather more regularly than the manufacturers suggestion.
My Avensis used oil (as do many Toyotas) and regular top ups were required, but at least I could see where it was.
