any tips on how to remove the alternator? looks like its gone kaput and I'd like to reduce the repair cost if I can by removing it myself.

its a 2008 1.9 diesel 4x4

I've had a look and can see two large torx head bolts at the rear of the engine that look like they hold the alternator to a bracket but I can't see any third bolt.

I assume theres a tensioner on the belt

I can't see the plug

the removal at the rear of the engine looks very tight, does it come out easily?

i'm stuck for time, is it a faff and worth entrusting to a garage?

thanks

gary

it will come out of the back, with the combined skills of a gymnast and gynaecologist, the guy i took my alternator to said they can do repairs insitu, so may be worth a call to your local auto electrician first, the guy local to me charged me £45 and got it back in under half an hour, took me an hour to get it out of the car!! think the 3rd bolt was a hexagon bolt, that i got to through the wheel arch....

hi again, thanks for the reply, I'm just north of wrexham, who did you use?

and hour in and an hour out is OK

cheers

Brill. They're just round the corner from me

Fingers crossed I can get it out ok tomorrow.

Thanks fir your help

they are quick, as the alternator is very common, mostly used in vauxhalls so they carry all the spares, was a couple of diodes that had gone in mine and they just go, work is guaranteed for 12 months...nice bloke....if your paying by cash its £45, if your paying on card there's a surcharge...;)...the plug is under the plastic cover at the rear of the alternator, one is a spade connector and the other is a nut on a captive bolt/terminal....

I take it £45 is removing the alternator myself. And refitting.

I'll give it a go tomorrow.

Cheers again

yeah, £45 for bringing it in yourself, though i didn't ask him how much for insitu, as there didn't seem much point, but they do a mobile service for the local car dealers, might be worth a call first, but its not that difficult, think i had to loosen my EGR valve a little to wiggle it past a bit, but i didn't have to take it off, jack up the car and take the drivers wheel off, obviously take off the drive belt, undo the mounting bolts, undo the nut on the back, plastic back comes off, pull off the spade connector, undo the nut that holds the other connection on, pull/wiggle the alternator out, that's it, refitting it just the reverse, put a socket/spanner on the tensioner, push it clockwise and it takes up the tension so you can remove the belt, Robert is you uncle and Francis is you mothers sister...

Bit of a faff but it's off. Regulator clearly burnt out so fingers crossed

Thanks again
