hi,

I have a 61 reg fiat scudo 2.0, I was driving it when it suddenly lost all power, there was no faults on the dash, so when I pulled up and tried to restart it, it would start but then cut out with loads of smoke coming out the back.

I had to get a recovery truck to take me home, its been in a garage all day and they don't know whats up with it, does anyone have any ideas...

they have checked the fuel filter, that's ok, cant remember what else they checked to be honest :bang:

Hi, and welcome,

CHECKED - or changed fuel filter..?
do they appear to know what they are doing..??
( who is paying for the parts that DO NOT fix the problem..)

stage 1 would be to plug in a compatible Electronic fault code reader

use it to look at fuel rail pressures ( that being LOW would be a reson for a filter change)

but the SMOKE is either "overfuelling" = too much fuel in cylinder for an efficient burn.. ,

or oil smoke = mechanical damage

I would spend the 10 mins interrogating the ECU,

then another 20 removing the plastic covers and checking the engine timing marks.

slipping of time would / could explain the poor running.

How was the vehicle in the last few months.. any major work done recently..??

hi thanks for the reply,

the garage are telling me their is metal bits in the fuel filter, so the fuel pump is broken and i need a new one, plus a new filter plus new injectors and are quoting me about £2k to fix...does this sound right to you?
i am not a mechanic so i dont have a clue when it comes to cars/vans

no work carried out since i bought it in november

I'm assuming a 61 Scudo will be a 'common rail' diesel, so a pressure pump that maintains the fuel pressure and electronic injectors, much like a petrol engine, but with higher pressures.

If the pump fails, and creates such metal debris, then I would expect the filter to catch it all. So the injectors should be protected.
Good on them to find the debris in the filter, but they could be recommending injectors to prevent a comeback.
Pump will need replacing, filter housing is cleanable, filter of course should be replaced, but that is a service item anyway. Pipes from pump to filter need cleaning, probably just a back flush.
Have they found debris in the injectors, or are they recommending so to be sure all is new and well? If they do not replace the injectors, it may well run fine, but if it does not, you can't blame them. It could be an option to not do the injectors, and may have to replace soon after if necessary. Discuss their reasoning. They have to protect themselves, so make sure you understand their viewpoint, and they yours.
