How embarrassing. I fixed the heater, thank goodness. Under the black motor unit, if you look up from underneath with your head in the passenger footwell, there's an oblong brown connector with four wires in it (one thick). Unplug that (it pulls down under the influence of gravity...) then look at the contacts, clean them, push the plug back in, and hey! Presto! It works again!
