I have a 2003 1.9 TD Scudo van which has been ace so far.

I left my house on Tuesday and about 5 mins into the motorway (about 15 mins from house so not as if stone cold engine) accelerated to 65-70 then heard a 'pop' the same as if you'd run over a juice carton.

Black smoke poured from the exhaust, but, when I eased off I could do about 55-60 in 5th without any obvious smoke at all. I was going to come off at the next junction but, for various reasons I won't go into (i.e missed meeting worth potentially a lot more than a 12 year old van I want to replace for something smaller anyway) I carried on. And it was alright to be honest.

Anyway, I then stayed overnight at my girlfriends but as she lives in the middle of town and I had no suitable tools, I decided to head back - the worst that could happen was using my home recovery.

Again, lots of black smoke and 'bunny hopping' accelerating in low gears. Turbo sounds about normal, usual whistle. And then about 15 mins in, again just as I was about to give it up and call recovery, almost back to normal. In fact I would say 30 mins in it was accelerating as normal, with virtually NO smoke, the last 20 mins of the journey were almost as normal.

No horrible engine noises
No obvious turbo noises out of place
No overheating
No obvious massive oil loss
No obvious leaks

I know it's foolish to carry on in these circumstances but I'd value the van at £500-600 realistically.

Any ideas anyone? Too dark to have a look now, but does this sound like something silly and cheap, i.e turbo air hose??
