Haven't been about for a bit, and now of course it's problem time.

Coming back along the dual carriageway, up a bit of a hill flat out at about 65MPH. Some smoke behind to be seen in headlights behind from door mirror, but there usually is. Intermittent fluctuation in power, van slowed periodically and briefly as if it was gusting with wind out there. Unusually noisy "roar" from engine, as if exhaust leak near manifold, when accelerator down, coming in only when pedal down/revs up, noise sounded vaguely like clutch slip symptom.

Tests yesterday (booting in in 2nd/3rd) seemed to give clutch slip like symptoms - up to speed, sudden lack of power and increased engine noise.

However, Mr. Clutch tested and said not clutch slip, could be turbo/pipe/something.

Today noticed when accelerating even gently in "too high a gear" leads to power fluctuation, sometimes pulls, sometimes very briefly for 1/2 a second not pulls. Accelerating in 3rd. most noticeably gives good result briefly 'till speed rises then roaring noise/lack of power. Same in all gears I *think* at a particular RPM?

What could it be, & how to check it?

BTW, Mr. Clutch has a nice cost calculator on their website ("Clutch estimator").

Yes yes. Black smoke, no power, drinking fuel. Off for a forum search...

MrC replaced a 1/2"/12mm ish pipe, or rather cut the end off it and re-fixed it with a jubilee clip.

This pipe tees into a much fatter pipe which can be seen looking down behind the radiator, sort of underneath the battery. I don't know what these are called or what they do except that they are turbo-related.

Low down power better, but still clouds of black smoke and a rasping loud raspberry noise still there seemingly from behind the bulkhead when flooring it in 2/3/4, and well down on power at 50MPH plus and drinks fuel.

Could there be something else, or has running with this small pipe split now mended knackered something?

Sounds to me (pun intended!) like a leaking turbo air hose. My hose from the intercooler to inlet manifold popped on a motorway run, it sounded like a wet fart after that with loss of power and some smoke. Smokes because of insufficient air to burn the fuel. You need to find the air leak and replace the hose. Could be anywhere from the turbo, via intercooler to inlet manifold. There might be a dribble of engine oil from the leak because the turbo hoses usually have some inside.

Thank you thank you. I will try and pop it up on a kerb and look around. A "wet fart" is a good description of the noise (accelerating in 3rd-5th is the easiest time to hear it); a very loud wet fart!

Q. Will damage result from continuing to drive? Not doing motorway miles, trying to avoid using at the moment. Anyone?

Not sure what knock on effects might be of continued use but it's not running right, best to get it fixed asap before something else goes.

the issue with the intercooler supply hose , means it's NOT combusting efficiently,

NOT good longterm..,

Thanks for the info. Latest is that the cat. is choked with carbon.

Perhaps this happened due to/before the small hose that was fixed?

It might explain the noise and lack of power, perhaps (the cat/turbo end joint is "spring loaded").

Fingers crossed for the cat cleaner to work, or it'll be a ton for another one.

It's about £100 for a new cat for 1 2.0, and they're fairly easy to fit. Mine's being cleaned out as we speak, and it'll be about £70 just for that - only having it done as it's in the shop now and my transport is currently.... bicycle!

Well, they cleaned out the cat., which was a pity rather since it sabed only £40 on the cost of a new one, however, it's better than a bicycle, as above.

It sounds better. Ther's more top-end power, but I do not think it's as powerful it was, it should be quicker than it is. If I boot it, there are clouds of black smoke still, that spread over the road when I look in the mirror. It's used 10L of fuel since it went in, and hasn't done many miles at all.

So, whatever it is is not fixed. What is the problem, considering the above?

The problem was a hole in the turbo to intercooler hose, fix described in other thread.
