Hi, I have a 2002 Reg 2.0 jtd 16v Scudo and need to top up/replace the gearbox oil following the replacement of a speedo sensor. (About half a pint of oil was lost, and I had a shampoo in the process!)
I gather that it easiest to do this via the gearbox breather pipe - if I try refilling with the van jacked up, oil escapes from the filler plug hole.
My problem is that after several hours grovelling about under the jacked up vehicle, and scouring the front and clutch side of the engine, I just cannot locate anything that I can say with any confidence looks like a breather.
The only thing I noticed is shown in the following snap:

This shows the nearside of the engine taken with the air filter removed and the arrow points to a short metal pipe that is covered by a rubber cap. However, this appears to be attached to the alloy housing that I suspect controls the air going to/from other components. The last thing I want to do is to start pouring oil into somewhere it shouldn't go!

Can a anyone either confirm that this is the gearbox breather, or tell me exactly where the pesky thing is lurking?

My hearfelt thanks for any response/s:)

sure its under air filter box remove box and theres a small plug

Thanks for your prompt repy, but are you confirming that the thing arrowed in the pic is what I have been searching for, or that there is another plug directly under the filter box?

The only thing I can recollect seeing was an oblong black plastic cover to where something entered the clutch housing, but I shall have another look tomorrow in the daylight.
Many thanks

Hi (again),
I am totally baffled! This is a snap directly above where the air filter hose/box is situated. The only things I can see of significance is a threaded hole (shown just right of centre) that doesn't seem to go anywhere - I tried poking a small screwdriver into it and its only about about an inch deep, and a sensor with electrics connected to it. (Slightly above centre and partially obscured by some cabling.)
Help!!!!!!!!!!!

FIAT's generally have the filler / dipstick hole on the FRONT facing end of the g-box casing,

can you not jack the vehicle so the front is highest, and use a syringe to fill until it dribbles..?,
( pretty sure NOTHING in your pic is if use..),

p.s. we are all meeting around the corner from you next sunday.., the 26th - see events section,

Hi Varesecrazy,
I have tried to use a hand held pump to fill up via the speedo sensor hole, but only managed to get a litre in before the oil started dribbling out. This was with the front of the van jacked up on blocks about a foot above the floor.
In the meantime I decided out of desperation to remove the sensor shown in my previous pic. (I now know that this is the reversing light sensor.)
This entailed taking the battery out, removing the tray at the side of the battery tray, and moving the various cable etc out of the way.
I was then able to get a 22mm tube spanner over the sensor and have enough room to be able to turn it.
With the use of a plastic pipe connected to a funnel I then managed to top up with a litre in 2 mins. (Should be 1.9 litres in total.)
The problem is that my speedo still does not work :(

I hope my posts help other poor souls afflicted by the apalling lack of proper information regarding our vehicles.
(Local garages I contacted were just a waste of time.)
