HI! I hope someone can help me out, iv got a prob with my van. About 6 months ago i had a sudden loss of power on the way to work, this only lasted a few seconds and cleared. Since then iv had no probs until, 2 weeks ago when i was driving down the motor way. It was a sudden jerk with a loud noise, followed by a loss of power. I managed to get to the hard shoulder, the engine didnt cut out ( in fact it just ticked over sweet as a nut) also no lights on the dash lit up. I tried to rev it up, but it was flat sort of hunting for revs. This cleared again and i managed to get off the motor way, but this problem happened 2 more times on the way home. I managed to get home with the problem still showing, so i left it over night with plans of takeing it to the garage in the morning. The following day it started no probs, i drove it to the garage with no probs. Its been in the garage 2 weeks now, they have been useing it daily aswell, to try and get the problem to show again NO SUCH LUCK. They told me they have plugged it in to 3 diff computers, and there is nothing comeing up. Can anyone point me in the right direction, has anyone had this prob, if so what was it. Hope someone can help me, thanks in advance Barry.

P.S the van is a 51 plate (2002), with 119k on the clock.

Please take my advice as from a knee jerking novice...but it may be helpful till the pro guys get on the case;

My first thought is, what a splendid way to use all your fuel up and save theirs over two weeks of scratching round...I can only hope they are reputable...another two weeks could be quite tasty with the cost of fuel.

Second; the two computers they use, I betcha they are not the all whistles and bells used by main dealers...now I am fumbling in the dark here only going by what I have read or think I have read...that not all diagnostic computers will find all the fault codes...I think I saw somewhere that the gadget had to be set to Peugeot to fully read Fiat?, (sorry Guys bout the "P" word on forum:eek:)

Might be an idea to find a main dealer for this one...but wait till others reply in case I am wrong

Peugeot Planet will read the scudo engine ecu as Peug. Expert. This is a pc based software.
From your description it sounds like the fault may be in the turbo circuit. Possibly an air leak. Could also be the infamous EGR valve playing up.
Did you get clouds of black smoke out the exhaust?

No there was no black smoke (there may be soon tho, when i burn the damn thing LOL).
The EGR valve was mentioned, by all accounts they have put something to clean it through the system, dont know how that works tho.
Regarding the turbo, I would have thought if there was an air leak, the problem would be constant.
The van has been dropped back off, but i cant get to it until the weekend. Iv been told by a fitter in work today to check a few things, as he had a simular problem on his van. He told me to check the fuel filter for swarf, if there is any present im to remove a sensor or something near the fuel filter and clean it (small black thing held on by 2 T30 bolts, contains magenets or something). I dont know how true this is, but he said it could be the pump in the tank breaking down. Appartently his problem only happened when he was below 1/4 of a tank, and funny enough i was just below a 1/4 of a tank (dont know what diff that makes tho, worth checking out tho).

Hi Barryjohn,

I was just wondering if you had found a solution to the problem with your van. Exactly the same thing has happened with ours (apart from the dashboard warning light comes on with ours and no loud noise).

It's a bit of a saga (so bear with me :)) but this is the history of our problem. In March last year my husband was driving down a duel carriageway when there was a sudden loss of power and the engine light came on, he nursed it home (a couple of miles) quite slowly. By the time I had phoned our garage to let them know we coming in and got ready to follow him - 10 mins max - it started again and drove as if nothing had happened, although the light was still on. After much scratching of heads the garage decided it was a problem in the turbo and replaced a hose. After this the van ran perfectly until December.

In December, driving down the motorway in the pouring rain - same thing happened again - we managed to get over to the hard shoulder and called our emergency assistance. 30 mins later the tow truck arrived, the guy got in, turned the engine on, revved it up - no apparent problem although the warning light was still on. He towed us to his garage, put it on a diagnostic computer, couldn't find any faults, drove it around for 15 mins and was baffled. We agreed that we would continue on our journey, we got as far as the gates to the garage before we broke down. Stayed the night in a dreadful hotel (we were 400 miles from home), next day after replacing a solenoid valve on the turbo he declared it fixed and we were on our merry way (y)

30 minutes later and once again on the motorway - guess what . Called emergency assistance again, a different tow truck appeared as we were now out of range of the first guy. Again, when he arrived there was no apparent problem, he towed us into his garage, did some tests and declared that there was nothing wrong, after speaking to the previous garage they decided to take us to the nearest Fiat dealership.

We left the van with the Fiat garage for over a week, they did multiple diagnostic tests but could find nothing wrong and said we should come and collect it. It drove fine, got us home and lasted for two weeks (n)

Our local garage had it back again, they kept it for 2 weeks constantly testing it and driving it around (and with it breaking down while they had it), they then took it to a specialist garage for testing with no result, after looking at everything they could think of and giving it a good clean we had it back.

3 weeks later, same thing  It has now been in the garage for 7 weeks and we are no nearer to an answer. The engine management system has been sent to a specialist place in the UK (we are in France) and as with all the other garages that have looked at it they can't find what the problem is :bang: Everyone seems to be completely baffled with it and are now starting to wash their hands of the problem.

Coincidentally, our Scudo is also a 2.0 jtd, 51 (2002) and has about 117K on the clock.

A friend of a friend has suggested that it could possibly be a problem with the crankshaft position sensor so I'll be checking this out with the garage tomorrow - do you know if your mechanic looked at that?

If anyone has any ideas I'll be eternally grateful - please don't get too technical though as I'm just a girlie who knows nothing about vans and will also have to translate into French to discuss with our garage (my technical vocabulary is quickly improving).

i have same van mine done this no one seemed to no problem so i disconnected the air mass flow and van ran great without it also engine management light went out i fitted new air mass flow about 3 months ago and van is running great hope this helps

You would like to think that will all the garages and all the test done they would of checked the MAF and Crank sensor.

Unless the diagnostics side of the Scudo is poor and doesnt report faults only failures!
