Sat Nav

How good are Sat Nav's? I thought about buying the TomtomONE when i pass my driving test as its only about £100 now at Halfords. I just wondered how accurate it is, like does it say "approach roundabout in right hand lane and take third exit" or is it more like, "at roundabout go right".
I suppose each Sat Nav varies, but ive read the TomTomONE is one of the best for the price. I only really need it for things like going to Drayton Manor park (35 miles away from me)

Re: Sat Nav

They are different and as far as I know only advise such as " at the traffic circle (Navman US wording) take the third exit" or such like. It wont teach you how to approach a roundabout. There are several setting on most if not all to choose a preference for Motorways (fastest route) or B roads (shortest route) and a balance anywhere in between those. Lots of menu set-ups to customise your Satnav, really it comes down to preference, price and functionality, not forgetting updates, cameras etc etc.

Re: Sat Nav

I think they are good, and the TomTom One is very good, and easy to use.
It will say things like, "Go right on the roundabout, third exit."
It will not say, "go right on the roundabout, third exit, approaching in lane three, but be careful, someone in the left-hand lane is going all the way round without indicating".

You may only be going to Drayton Manor Park, now, but sat navs know about all sorts of other places too.

Re: Sat Nav

I've used the TomTom's for years now (since version 2, we are not coming up to 7) and they have always worked for me. As long as you have common sense your fine.

The POI's are handy too. I was looking for a museum that I knew was within 60miles so I just looked through the nearest museums found it and it took me right there .

Re: Sat Nav

The only way to find out which sat nav you like is to go to a shop and have a look and a play with them.

Personally I prefer the Garmin sat navs, you can get a Garmin Nuvi with UK and Ireland for around £100 these days. If you wanted European street mapping that would cost a bit more, I think the best I saw was £170 for a Nuvi 250 with Euro maps. There are cheaper units like the C 510, but these are older, bigger and heavier.
Depends what you're looking for, but don't leave them in the car, some scumbag will nick them.

Re: Sat Nav

Went into a well known electrical retailer today, they had a Garmin Nuvi 250 with Euro maps for just £117.99p I couldn't believe it.

Re: Sat Nav

yea your main options is garmin or tom tom, navman are pretty much a tom tom in the way they work and their maps. tom tom for customisation and editability. garmin for effective and simplicity. thats usually how i would sell them. you can do more with a tom tom but garmin is easier to use. since your on a forum you obviously competant with the net and could therefore grasp tomtom mapsource which will prove to be usefull to ya!
