Have an annoying engine warning light keep coming up with error code 0401
It is an intermittent fault as it goes off on its own I have had the egr valve changed and map sensor replaced had the egr system checked for leakages or blockage but the fault keeps re-occurring so far it has cost me over £500 in parts and labour
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing this engine fault

Ok the p0401 egr insufficient flow detected from memory ,I'm sad like that ! Have you had the whole intake system checked for leakages aswell ? I take it the vehicle had a maf aswell as a map to , when the egr opens the only thing to detect the flow is the maf , i.e. When the egr opens it detects a drop in the air flow in the engine , also a factor in this is the turbo due to it sucking air in to the engine over the normal flow of the swept volume of the cylinders aswell , and if the engine has swirl flaps fitted and are stuck they will become a factor aswell hope that helps

Yes have had the whole intake system checked and the maf and map sensor changed
( p.s forgot to mention it's a diesel 1.3 multijet engine ) also it only happens after I have made several short journeys around town it stops when I have made a long journey on the motorway but returns when I start doing short trips around town

Had a 1.4 Citroen c3 doing excactly the same thing at work back along would play up with no power when cold then better fine when hot with the same fault code that turned out to be the turbo sticking when cold first one I had seen do it usually it's the other way round ,

The odd thing is that there is no change in engine performance or fuel consumption had exhaust emissions tested last week and it was the same as when it passed its MOT 3 months ago
It was suggested that I buy a cheap engine code reader and just reset the engine warning light every time it comes on but I want to know what is causing the engine warning light to come on and I want to get it fixed

Well with a code reader you will also get some live data which will help

Don't buy any cheap obd code reader, I suggest alfaObd app on android its similar to MES and full bandle on eBay , a modified elm 327 all the colored cables plus you get a kll vag com cable as a bonus( all this for about £20 ) and otg plug ( connects to normal USB output mini USB ) to plug to your tablet or phone.

Don't want to buy a obd code reader I want to find out what is causing the error and to get the fault fixed ( the garage used a code reader to get the code and a readout of the system at the time of the error occurring and the reading show no problems at the time the error code occurred just error p0401 )

if the garage is using non-FIAT specific kit, then it will only give basic info..,

using FIAT / Alfa specific kit could be a better 1st attempt..still not expensive.

If you get a phone (AlfaObd) or laptop (Multiecuscan, my weapon of choice) based diagnostic system rather than just code a code reader you can leave it running, logging graphs of (say) airflow, boost and EGR demand and can look at it after a test drive to see what is happening when the warning comes on. This is what the garage should be doing, but they make more money just changing things. You may find it is a bad connection or sticking actuator. Multiecuscan www.multiecuscan.net and a USB adaptor e.g. ebay item 271275445368 will cost less than an hours labour at most garages.

Have been told this error code may be caused by a faulty DPFE sensor can anyone tell me where this sensor is located on the fiat qubo 1.3 multijet Diesel engine and possible post a diagram of its location
