That kind of random jumping about sounds like it's a loose connection 'somewhere' though inside or out.... - since the outside connectors are power in, steering wheel connectors and speakers I'm thinking internal although since your (possible) steering wheel buttons change channels, if one of those has a loose wire or the molex is not secure that could be a cause? Might be worth a check on the back of the steering wheel (bit of a PITA to look) as a DIY before getting a sparky in at cost.

I took the radio out and all looked fine it will work ok for 15 / 20 mins then it will play up ad none of the buttons will work on it but the next day its the same

Speculating further, if it's after a set period of time, that could be a problem inside the unit since in that time it will get hot (if you've ever ejected a CD after a long drive and felt how hot it is..) so it might indicate a fault with a component?

Again, apart from a sparky, could you switch units with a Fiat owning colleague to see if the same error persists? Perhaps you could try running the radio in the garage at home, out of its housing, car static and see what happens in the permitted 20 minutes run-time before it cuts off..
