Temp. warning light came on, on wifes punto, found low on water,checked for leaks ok. Seems to misfire,steam from exhaust suspect head gasket gone, unless anyone think of another cause.

White mayo on oil cap at all? dirty looking coolant water? from the overheating misfiring & steam from exhaust it does sound like the HG is blown im afriad..

OH dear, gonna change on friday, anything to catch you out replacing or is it pretty straight forward, I have bought new oil/filter and antifreeze, head set and bolts.

get the head skimmed or its likely it will go again in a few thousand miles

Well guys and girls ive just recently purchased a s reg punto s 60 and reading this thread it looks like i purchased a car with a head gasket problem, cos ive got all the systems. Geee i guess i do the head gasket and then move it on, Ive yet to hear anything good said about punto's. I paid £450 for the car, with 1 mths mot and 52,000 on the clock. I taxed it yesterday, i hope i can recover the money on a resale?

I take it all back about the punto's, yes it was the head gasket that had gone, but Ive put i new one on it took me 2 hours, and the car goes fantastic. These cars are so easy to work on, theres loads of space to get to the bits and it aint complicated at all.

did you skim the head? or it will go again soon probably might be ok though.

puntos are excellent imo, my sister ran a 60 for 6-7 years with hardly any trouble.

There's a lot to be said for an engine you can get your whole arm round

Well I checked the head properly and it seemed to be ok. But if it goes again soon i;ll get it skimmed next time.

Yea... i had a nissan primera 2.0 se and if i dropped a penny in the engine it wouldn't have dropped through it was that crammed with parts...lol
