oil pressure warning light on, oil level full

My wife's Punto has just had its oil pressure warning light come on, within a minute of starting to drive. She stopped almost immediately and I checked the oil level and its full. What are the most likely causes? If it needs to be checked out at the garage, is it safe for the engine to drive it to the garage if the oil pressure light is on?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Tim

problem is it depends on the cause of the light.
really risky to drive it if it really is low pressure whereas if its an electrical fault its fine

Most likely the pump is shot hence low pressure when full. Get it towed to a garage to be on the safe side.

the dipstick wont give you an accurate reading unless you leave the car turned off for about 10-15mins, coz the oil will be up in all the gallerie's of the engine and you have to let it all come back down to get a proper reading.,.,
try that and if theres still plenty of oil in there then check the wiring nad the pump.,.
