Punto Exhaust Problems, With New One Fitted

Hi all,

I was recently setting off on a trip to the City of carlisle some 35 miles away, when all of a sudden I heard a deep burble coming from the Exhaust's cat (Dont quite know if it was the silencer or the cat right at the rear of the mk2b 1242cc 16v model) at the rear. After 2 and a bit minutes into the journey, the exhaust gve up the ghost and, well simply dropped off where the long pipe connects to the silencer, after a couple of minutes of getting it detatched from the underside of the car, it finally budged, and I was then able to drive down the road to the local garage.

(Might i just add in this space how good the car sounded everytime i put my accelerator more than 1/3 of the way down )

Anyway back to the point:

When at my local garage they went through a bok showing all the diferent compatible exhausts, baring in mind i simply wanted the same one as the one fitted from new.

My model is the Punto Active Sport 1242cc 16v MK2b. this needed a exhaust with a slencer and a cat, the 8v version doesn't, otherwise it would sound like a 'spitfire'.

I then drove through to a well known exhaust garage, where they fitted a new exhaust. job well done, you'd think. Wrong.

When starting in first and reving through to second gear, the exhaust rattles, but when at speed in third (and sometimes in all gears depending on the road serface and revs)

I returned to the garage to get the problem fixed, and it now came away worse, rattling even harsher.

Can anyone help?! This would be hugely appreciated.

Cheers,

Steven.

N.B. - My advice would be that if you need a new exhaust fitted, make sure that the correct 8v or 16v version is fitted.

Re: Punto Exhaust Problems, With New One Fitted

cheers for the quick reply mate,

I was thinking of going to an independent garage down the road so that if they find anything wrong with the car, i then have proof of a problem, but i was just wanting to see if anyone had a problem like this.

REMEMBER:

8v Punto's Mk2 & Mk2b Models have one single exhaust pipe and a cat at the very rear of the car.

16v Punto's Mk2 & Mk2b Models have an exhaust pipe with silencer in the middle, and a cat at the rear.

V. Importaint for your car to pass its M.O.T!!!

Re: Punto Exhaust Problems, With New One Fitted

cheers for pointing that out.

The rear box on the 8v must be the cat then musn't it?

I was told that the exhaust would be very very loud if it had the 8v one fitted.

do you know why there isn't two boxes on the 8v's version?

cheers once again,

Steven.

Re: Punto Exhaust Problems, With New One Fitted

don't think the car would be much louder with 8v one might even have a bit more power, the reson the center box was fitted is to get passed new car noise regulations

Re: Punto Exhaust Problems, With New One Fitted

a rattling suggests you have the right exhaust but it isnt fitted correctly.inside the silencer are baffles if broken they will rattle at low rpm.are you sure that the exhaust is hanging correctly on the rubbers and isnt making contact with the floorpan or rear bumper and that the exhaust bolts are tightened to the correct torque
