We have been investigating to find out why the CODE LIGHT came on the MK1 Punto cabrio 1.6.
The car will not start anymore!:bang:

We have check every possible cornector and fuses.HOWEVER!!!

WE HAVE FOUND THIS!!!!

We had notice the heater matrix has been leaking!
Found the ECU covered in coolant stains and water which sits under the heater matrix.
We took the ECU out from the car and found it was soaked inside and out and also the two connectors to ECU were soaked the RED and YELLOW.
Then we had took the ECU apart and found water on the electric boards inside.(you will need a torx fittings to do this)
Then took the ciruit board out and found that it has burnt the ciruit and case due to the amount off water inside.

This has been the cause off the CODE LIGHT to come on the MK1 Punto cabrio 1.6.
We are hopeing to get this ECU repaired asap

I recommend that all MK1 Punto owners are to check if there matrix is leaking as this seems to be the most common fault with the CODE LIGHT.

Pic`s below off damage ECU

Good stuff & handy info but it is known to dealers especially those with airbag ecus/autobox ecus situated wheres yours is however glad you found the fault...all you got to do is pay for it now:(

If we cannot get the ECU fixed do we need to change everthing?? like ECU,IGN+KEYS ECT?
We need as much information as possible what to do next:worship:

this only happens to the daft 1.4 and 1.6 engines.

and the 1.4 and 1.6's are the only ones that appear to get leaky matrix#s.

coincedense, I think not fiat you money grabbing banditos'

no red key = new ecu, new keys, new locks, new ignition barrel, new black box thing.

start a saving!!!! (approaching £1000 mark!!!)

or find a scrap 1.6 (plenty about, doesn't have to be a cabrio) and pilage its ecu, locks, keys, barrel, black box. probably for under £50 if you remove the parts yourself, then copy the key you get and be happy!!!!

Its not quite that bad. First of all providing you have ANY valid key with codebox you can add a new ECU, simply plug it in and switch on, it mates up automatically. At least is does for every other Punto and Bravo ECU before 2000. I have done it many times. However.... I have never tried it with the GM ECU, but I strongly suspect it will be the same. You may be abe to get s/h ECU, but you must have the nvram erased (virginised). Even if you dont believe this you can have the keycode recovered and a red key re-made.
