Well, almost, as I went out at lunchtime today to find someone had given this such a hefty shove that it was hanging by the two wires to connect it to the mirror movement control inside the car. (Previously I've twice had it given a bit of a shove from above - the second time after it was 'fixed' by my garage after I took it for an MOT, forgot to mention the problem to them, and two days afterwards I noticed that they'd put a strong clip round it to keep it upright instead of a penny inserted from underneath to keep it upright)

I see from another thread on this forum in 2003 that the answer is to buy a new mirror assembly, but how do I disconnect that from the current mirror and connect it up to a new one? I haven't taken a long look at it as I had to go out shortly afterwards and so just taped it up which worked for a while but now it's hanging off again and it was dark by then so there wasn't much else I could do today.

I could take it back to the garage and ask them to do it, but if it's not too hard then I could give it a go. Bear in mind that I am not very good with cars so if it's more advisable to go straight to the garage then I won't mind being told to do that :)

Thanks in advance and here's to a car-hassle-free 2007 for all on this forum.

Yep, It's dead easy to do and my one was going to cost £200 plus VAT without being sprayed at a local garage.

Got one for £20 from a scrappy and that is for the colour coded ones, so a black one would be less I would imagine. (y)

pull rubber off adjuster, you see a ring, undo ring, jently pull of iner plastic cover, you will see 3 alan screws, undo them and mirror will just come off, refit is that in reverse, get one from a scrappy they wont cost a lot.

oh alan keys you can get from poundland

Thanks to you and MissVirmin for the replies so far. I couldn't actually find where Yell.com claimed a particular scrapdealer was near me today, but even though they're apparently open 7 days a week the whole area looked like a bit of a ghost town (I should've picked a better time to have my wing mirror broken! :) )

Still, I've located another one near me (will check that out shortly, but unlikely tomorrow as I bet it'll be shut then too) and seen one going cheap online so even if I ended up with two at least I'd have a spare for when it (possibly) happens again.

On a technical note, is it easy to pull the rubber off the adjuster? I tried gently today but it didn't want to come off and I didn't want to pull too hard before I get a replacement. Looking at some pics I take it the adjuster is part of the assembly?

I never really noticed the plastic cover both inside and outside the car as I haven't looked at them closely before and haven't been particularly analytical about cars as I'm usually useless when it comes to fixing them, but I'm game to give this a go once I've got a replacement wing mirror assembly.

Thanks again.

(Edit: PS. Those keys at Poundland, Dave. How much do they cost? ;) Seriously, while I was out and about I nipped into Maplin and got a set of seven allen keys for 2.99 as I didn't have any so they'll probably come in handy for something else later too)

You will never run out of jobs with a set of allen keys on a punto :)

As dave said, pull the rubber bit off from the inside (the bit you move the mirror about with) and underneath you will find a metal cable with a thicker bit on the end (which is what pops into the rubber to hold it on)
Once the screws are undone the mirror will come away and you can remove both triangle bits (one inside and one outside) from the door.

You probably wont get a new rubber bit with a scrappy mirror, so save the other one, but you should get the triangle plastic bits.

Just a quick update on this, since I got the mirror in early January but thought it might take longer than expected to change it over and I always found a reason to put it off, such as not wanting to change it over if I was about to set off somewhere and now I've got a week off work so have the time to do it.

In all, it only took about 40 minutes, since I was taking it slowly and didn't want to muck it up, and I'm pleased that I've got it all sorted as I'm normally totally useless with cars. And the mirror was only £16 inc P&P on Ebay :)

There's a difference between this and the one it's replacing, since the shape of the plastic where the mirror is 'connected' on the outside is slightly different and with a gentle touch it doesn't seem to be able to turn in like the original one did (unless it can and I'm just not wanting to tempt fate), say for if a car knocked it when it goes past.

It also came with the triangle plastic bits, allen screws, ring and the plastic bit covering the adjuster so I've put the metal bits and the inside plastic triangle to one side for a while just in case they come in handy at a later date, although the plastic bit's a bit big so I may as well get rid of that.

Thanks again to both Dave and Miss*Virmin for your help with this. It's very much appreciated.

Hello again :)

Glad you got the job done without any troubles (y)

The wing mirror that has replaced your old one, should bend in towards the car without any trouble, if it is an original Punto mirror.
The only exception I can think of is, if someone has fixed it in place, through previous damage.
But more likely that it is just a little stiffer than your old one.

The only way that you would break your mirror normally would be up/down/backwards.

So I always tuck both of mine in now when parking, to prevent damage. Once you get into the habit, it's second nature. :D

Hi, I have taken off the outer parts, but instead of allen key bolts, it has a large plastic nut, do I need any special tools to get into this to remove???????
