Painting plastic bumpers ?

right, iv got a mk1 punto s, but i want the same bumpers as on an sx, as in they match the bodywork and are not the naff (imo) greyish plastic ones.

My question is are the sx bumpers the same plastic as the punto s bumpers ? in this case i could simply spray the original ones that are on my car ?
i assume for this i would need a special primer ?

OR are the above not true and im going to have to try and find sx bumpers and paint them to match my bodywork ?

thanks in advance

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

Yeh, put a coat of primer over the bumpers that are on your punto now, allow to dry and paint with the colour you want, dependin on how faded your paint is, there might not be an exact match!

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

sx dont have colour coded bumpers, just el/elx/sporting/gt

would be cheaper to find a set already sprayed on ebay/scrappy, you would also have fog lights then

yes i know, think i know the mk1 punto spec/details more than most

but generally the sx doesnt have them, but there was an update later on to have them on, tbh, most of the 98/99 puntos are mismatched.

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

The paint never takes well to standard plastic bumpers, ask any bodyshop.

My '96 Punto SX (P reg) has black bumpers, but I've seen later SX mk1's on P, R, and S reg. with body coloured bumpers

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

if you do choose to spray your own bumpers make sure you clean them well and get plastic primer they only need 1 coat of this then normal primer and paint and a couple of coats of laquer.

i have sprayed my own bumpers and found cellulose paint the best which already have laquer in it but i gave it a few coats of clear laquer just for extra protection.
good look and spray even

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

tbh i ahve to agree with beau, try and source some sx or even sporting/ gt bumpers cos you gonna get the styling then. the standard bumpers look a bit naff with or without paint. the higher models have more styling. check out cinquepunto's wide mouth (i think its a GT bumper with the slats removed?1?) looks awesome and gives an aggresive yet subtle look (if it can be both of those)

Re: Painting plastic bumpers ?

good work on the photoshop and it would look mean in real life - would love to see that on your car. i can remember spending hours cutting, sanding and refining every vertical slat in the PT cruisers front grille hard work but so worth it - made the car easier to clean too!!!!!
