I've just bought a 96 Punto 55SX 1.1 and the reverse lights dont come on when I engage reverse. All the other lights work and I've changed both reverse bulbs and checked the fuse (though not sure which it is, all the fuses were fine), I dont have a manual and dont know what else to check (havent a clue about cars), anybody have any suggestions? I also have a fairly bad condnsation problem on the windows (the windows are constantly wet), i've changed the heater to stop it circulating the air and this improved it a bit but normally have to have the heater on 1 or 2 while driving, the carpets are all dry and I cant find any leaks so any help on this mystery water would be appreciated.[?]

Hi,

It is likely to be the reverse light switch on the gearbox, have a look at the gearbox and see if you can see a switch with a wire on. Somebody else is bound to know where it is.

The condensation could have just built up if you had it on re-circulate. Turn on the heat full and drive with the window open to let the moisture out.

Have you checked the fuse box on the drives side, you have to undo 2 screws to open it, it should tell you on the back of the cover what fuse is what.

It is posible that the heater matrix is gone my carpets didn't get wet and there was no sign of a leak when mine went, I only had the wet windows and after a while a bad smell. take the radio out and see if there is any water behind there.

I have a mk2 and recently i have been experiencing moisture on the windows from inside the door. Whenever I put the windows down, they are covered in water on the way up, (and no it wasnt raining). I guess I will have to open the door up. Very surprised it would be air tight.

Did you have the fish? No...I ate it.

If there is any moisture in the car at all (in the mats or under them for instance) it can cause steaming up. It will come to light when you get in the car and start breathing! I usually drive with the heater on cold on one all the time. Kind of necesaary when it's damp like this time of year. Lex you might have moisture in the door for whatever reason.

I've taken the cover off the gear stick but theres no electrical cable, just a wirecable (connected to plastic for pushing down to get to reverse), I've had a look at the fuses on the drivers side but none of them are blown. Think I may have to follow the gear box, failing this, I'll follow the cables from the back light clusters to where ever they join up? Failing this, I'm buy the Haynes manual for it! I'll try the drain holes at the bottom as I also get water on the windows when the come back up. Cheers.

The reversing light switch is screwed int o the front of the transmission casing, best accessed from underneath.

I don't know why people keep going on about condensation, its not a fault, you get it with loads of cars, if your car is dry inside you won't get condensation but considering out weather it only takes you to get rained on to make the inside wet enough to form condensation.

But its also normal for the windows to clear after having the heater on for a while, if they don't there is a problem.

If you have a lot of moisture in the car the heater may only clear half the windscreen. The Punto heater is quite good and even if you're having a damp problem it will usually clear enough for you to be able to drive. I had a damp problem recently which I traced to the rear seats which I had over-cleaned it seems. I left them up for a few days, took the mats out, left the windows down (recommended if you have secure place to park and weather predictable and good) and problem solved.

Until the engine's warmed up enough for the gauge to move past its bottom "point", the heater is pretty much useless for demisting. Best thing to do is either let it tick over for a few minutes before driving, to get some heat into the motor, or to drive with the windows down for the first few mins (cold, yes, but it lets the damp air out of the car and helps shift condensation).
