Hi all , i think i need to replace the sump on my punto, its a "y" reg but im told that they do seem to become rusty. It is not leaking as yet but i scraped a fair bit of rust of it the other day and as im off on my hols in a couple of weeks i thought it would be best to have it sorted. Now, in have had a qoute from the garage that i use(not main dealer) and i have always been happy with the work they have done for me in the past. But the qoute is for one hundred and fifty pounds, is this a fair price? cheers all

Is it really that bad, a little bit of surface rust is normal on something that is exposed to all that water and road salt.

My sump from basically the same engine I assume is 9 years old and although grotty is leak free, hold off till it actually goes would be my advice.

Yeah maybe im worrying too much about it , i just dont want it to start leaking on my holidays. However i dont think that the sump is all that thick and the amount of rust i scraped off was quite alot althought i did put on some rust killer to try and slow it down, wether it will do that is another thing. Im in two minds really as what to do. cheers

IIRC its about 2mm thick steel.

The sumps tend to go porous as a result of rust, but only on older cars really, a Y reg seems a bit too new IMO to be doing that (I think)

Give it a clean and a paint with high temp paint, cannot do any harm, but probably will make you feel better;) . Dont think you should need a sump on a car of that age really.

Yep i'll give that a go, cus im also a bit of a tight arse:) cheers

Were can u get a sump for a 1.2 8v punto ?. I have got the same problem with my 51 plate punto its got a really bad case of rust on the sump . The other day i noticed some oil on the floor so i got under the beast and there it was like a weetabix covered in oil . I dont fancy going to the fiat dealership and getting stung .I can get it fitted myself.

Many thanks

£150 Is good as you need to drop the exhaust manifold to gain clearance for sump removal then there is the gasket sealer and new oil.parts Total I recon about £100.plus 2 hours labour.any advance on that?

I had my Y reg sump replaced about 18months ago due to corrosion.

I paid £120 (which we agreed before the work was done) but thet garage did say it took longer than the thought.

i got a non-genuine sump with sealant for £45, and fitted it myself, only awkward bit is that the flywheel cover has to be taken off and the bolts behind there are awkward to get too!

thinking bout buying a 1996 FIAT PUNTO pretty decent condition and price. first time driver so looking for an allright runabout really and insurance is decent too for me on this one. All im worried about is on the description the seller says "oil leak due to corroded sump" been looking around n stuff n not really that hung up on cars so dont even know what one is or where i can get one. is it worth buying the car at £300 and then getting a sump thingy? cousins fiance is a mechanic so easily fixed..but is it worth buying the car with the corroded sump? cheers guys!

Old thread revival but can see why.
Any very cheap car is unlikely to be a low cost vehicle. It wont "just" be a rusty sump to worry about.
Walk away, unless you are really good at DIY mechanics.

I wouldn't be put off by a leaky sump - they all go eventually - mine at 8 yrs. Cost for parts and sealer is about £50 for a non Fiat part from Beevers. As it's your first , don't part with the cash without a second pair of eyes checking it out for you - even if you have to pay.Make sure the sump is the only source of the leak. Cheap cars are cheap for a reason - often someone getting rid of a hidden problem. Walk away if in any doubt - there are lots of cars out there.

That's my point exactly. The sump itself is no big deal, but what about:
Radiator? Leaks will blow the head gasket
Has the head gasket already blown? Was it done properly?
Cam belt - cheap to do but yet another job
Alternator and battery - easy to fix but yet more money
Clutch is at least £200 and same again (or more) if the gearbox bearings are failing.
Brakes, tyres, exhaust etc etc.
Body corrosion.

There is no guarantee, but cheap cars will have more of these things at the end of life. So in reality they are not cheap at all.
