I have a 2000 Punto HGT 1.8L. I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out a very sporadic stalling problem. My car will stall out whenever I am approaching an intersection or roundabout and I begin to decelerate and either press in the clutch and hit the brakes to downshift or kick it into neutral.

The stalling is VERY intermittent. Somedays it won't stall at all. Other days it seems like it stalls every time I come to a stop. If I am sitting in the driveway and rev the engine. 8/10 times it returns to a perfect idle. Sometimes it will dip too low and stall out.

Some things I have done so far

-changed engine coolant temp sensor
-changed spark plugs
-disassembled and cleaned the entire throttle body to include the IACV and MAF sensor.
-checked for vacuum leaks.

The car starts great and runs great. I just can't figure out why it is stalling some days and not others.
***I did have the battery changed about a month ago and I believe this is when the problem started. So I'm guessing it might be electrical at this point?

This should really be in the Mk2 Punto section.... copy or add a link to this thread.

You should get an ECU diagnosis done on the car, that should highlight any failed sensors (lambda?) etc. Of course there could be a wiring problem, or sometimes after a battery change some things (Throttle?) can need to be reset or go through a teaching process.

You could also ask in the Barchetta section since they have the same engine as you.

When it stalls does it restart straight away? Or does it take 10mins to cool?

Is the crank sensor on the flywheel? As operating clutch could be moving the flywheel out of alignment of the sensor?

Any check engine light?

Anything changed recently / been worked on before been done?

It starts back up right away no problem! I'm not sure where the crank sensor is...no check engine light. And only thing done before the problem was the battery was changed.

I have noticed when I hit the brakes the dash lights dim...I'm thinking something electrical? But I wouldn't even know where to start with that

Not a expert on Punto, lots of them on here, and I bow to their knowledge. My two Daughters both run them, and have both had really weird problems........both cured by removing the rear light assy's (I know it sounds daft), and really cleaning the terminals......they corrode and get full of crud......worth a try for a hour or so's effort.
I was advised to do it by a forum member on here...........
Cheers Qube O.

Check the terminal on the battery. Are they tightly fastened?

Hi foltzie

Longshot if you're still active here, but just wondering if you ever managed to get this sorted?

My 05 HGT has had the same issue since I had it, no garage has been able to sort it - and at long last thought I had found one that had. (Found a split breather pipe from the throttle body) They've moulded the pipe back up and pretty well taped (no longer in production apparently, so would need a custom one moulding from silicon) but since I got it back it's actually been worse stalling nearly every other time.

Checked it today, and it still seems to be well taped up, so starting to worry it could be something else entirely.
