Hi guys im new to the forum so be gentle !!:D

I decided to put my beloved black punto gt back on the road after 6 years sitting uncovered in my dads drive. Yes i should have covered it:eek:

Unfortunately on towing and inspecting for mot, i had a small list with 2 cv boots to replace, lower exhaust elbow, exhaust rubbers, 2 tyres, nothing major.

But then when looking at the sills and taking out seats and looking under the carpet, there are 2 gaping holes along each sill:eek: !!! Drivers is worst one, at least 300 - 400mm long and the passenger about 300. Also a small hole above drivers rear wheel arch.

Got quoted about £250 per side + £250 for the rear wheel arch hole as have to lower the petrol tank initially by Father & son who like restoring cars.

But then he said once the plastic abarth sills come off for welding they may see more as need to check inner and outer sill. If more rust, more cutting out and the cost could double per side??:eek: Advised he would rather not start which makes me feel i should have an open cheque in respect of further costs.

Not looking for the cheapest job as appreciate the work required, just an honest decent job to get me through the mot.

Any honest good plate welders that can be recommended near crystal palace area? Or the group coordinators, can you recommend an honest welder at a reasonable cost? Let me know guys, cheers

Welcome to the forum. I have just carried out some welded repairs to the floor of my Cabrio where it meets the sill. I suspect the structure is very different, being a Cabrio. However, the most important information I can give is not to get a welder to plate over the rust. Before any welding, you must cut out all of the rust, otherwise it will continue to spread unseen under your nice patch. Obviously this will cost more, but it may be possible for you to make repair patches and cut out the rust and just pay someone to do the welding for you. When it is all repaired a good dose of waxoil or similar should be applied to unseen surfaces to keep it protected.

Excellent, yes the waxoil is imperative to keep water rusting it away again. Many thanks for the welcome. Had a new quote from my friends mechanic who so happens to be a welding wiz !! £400 squid for all the both sides and throwing in wheel arch for free as we give him loads of work :) Result !!

hi & welcome.
Think you have done well as it's been sat outside for that long [emoji33], I would agree in getting the rusty areas cut out and plated it will be worth it in the long run , the gt is getting a rare car these days , nice to see another getting some tlc [emoji1303], I waxoiled mine too , got the pipe into every place I could , it stank of it for weeks [emoji12]

Yep, been a long time but cant wait to hear it fire and rumble down the road, dump valve firing !! :) Black Gt's are very rare so looking to make a good job of this one. Cheers guys :)
