Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

mmm, they wont give you extra BHP if thats what you mean but they can make things more responsive.

I'd say dont spend silly money on them but keep to decent brands such as NGK and Denso.

Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

I remember when spilt fires first came on the market....

One mag did a review against I think, NGK Copper cores.... about quarter the price of the split fires.....

Guess which ones were better !!!

The cheaper ones....

Just get the gap correct on them.....

knackered HT Leads can cause problems as well as worn rotor arms and dizzy caps.... Do petrol puntos still have these though ? I drive a derv so wouldn't know !!!

Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

Some people like Super 4's, some don't. Van Aaken fitted them to turbo cinqs, so I'd take that as a sign of approval. I thought they made the car run smoother, myself.

One thing I would say is that most people who have experienced problems when fitting Super 4's have found another underlying problem soon after, such as MAP, lambda or head gasket troubles. The plugs don't cause the problems, but may be more sensitive to an engine that isn't on top form.

Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

I would say spark plug choice is a good one Bosch are pretty good but NGk and the quad spark's are really good also. TBH in my expereince and my dads vast 30 year experience of being in the mechanic business, if you buy a decent brand, you wont get any more BHP obviously, but it can make the engine run more efficiently, use 1 or 2 less mpg's sometimes, and a good set will not need replaced as oftern either. A good set can stop your cars cylinder head from foulinmg up and might not foul up as quickly on the spark plug either when under rich running conditions

Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

The most important thing is for the plugs to be resistor type, otherwise the ecu can receive electrical spikes back through the ignition system.

Re: spark plugs, affect performance??

I've used Denso plugs (Q20PR-U, I think) on my Punto for years, they seem to give much better response than the NGK's that I used to fit.

I've never tried any of the "performance" plugs; to me, any plugs that cost more than £12 a set are overpriced!
