I got a rear wheel bearing that fits punto mk1 1.2 with ABS brakes. Will this bearing fit a non-ABS car.

It should do, they look identical apart from the reluctor ring on the rear of it. As there's no sensor on the non-abs version, it should fit ok.

If you are replacing it yourself, why not take the old one off and check the measurements against the new one to be sure. If it'll fit, job done!

Thank you for your replies. I was hoping you confirm I can use the new hub/bearing I have. Last week when I was working on my rear brakes I notice one hub/bearing to be a bit rough and I seem to be hearing it started to make some noise, not to bad or conclusive yet. However, as I need to have another go at my brakes (handbrake not working as it should) I may replace the bearing/hub now as well.

Did not replace the Hub yet, but failed again to sort my handbrake. I was wondering if the handbrake lever part of the shoe when pulled fully will hit the inner of the hub so that the lever cannot be pulled enough to allow handbrake to be effective. I changed cables and have new shoes and there is very little brake on one wheel and ok on the other. I need to let the brakes bed in first to see if things improve. Even foot brake at the moment is not so good but this hopefully is related to new brakes will need bed in.

How are the adjusters?
I have a lockhead brake system and relies on the automatic adjuster which is part of the brake shoe. The shoes are new the bar that treansmits the mechanical movement from the cable and lever has no adjuster. Usually this bar has additional adjuster but I believe this is not the case for the lockhead system.

There is a ratchet and pawl adjuster system on the back of the leading shoe, maybe it needs to be manually adjusted to bring the shoes near the drums, how are the drums? I just replaced mine on my cabrio, new shoes, fitting kit and wheel cylinders.

Yes, this is what I call automatic adjuster. I usually adjust them to minimum so the drums can fit. Then when I press the brakes I can hear them clicking which means they do something. I had a look at the drums that I changed not to long ago, and the one on the wheel that is not working properly was slightly more worn, so decided to swap the drums around, but the brakes still work the same. I'll give the new shoes a bit of bedding in period before I investigate further. I hope the adjuster will click further as the shoes bed in. As I said normal braking seems a bit weak not just the handbrake.

How are the wheel cylinders? One of mine was seized on one side! Are they weeping?

I believe wheel cylinders are fine, when I was fitting shoes they were moving both sides. I also bled them. At the moment the pedal feels a bit like there is air in the system, but I hope this will sort itself once shoes bed in.

If there is air in the system the ONLY way to get it out is to bleed it, it will not sort itself! I would remove both drums again, measure them to make sure they are not too worn, check the handbrake cable connections on both sides, Does either drum have a lip?, Make sure the shoes are properly seated. The parts are dirt cheap thats why I renewed everything, If you intend to keep the car just renew everything and then you know what you have. I think drums, shoes, wheel cylinders and fitting kit was less than €70!

Yes, I will have to renew things if things not get better. As I said I bled the system at the rear already so there should be no air in there. I will recheck this if things do not improve. So far I replaced new shoes and new cables. The drums are fairly new, but I may replace them again. Last time I did this it fixed the handbrake temporarily but problem still came back. However, I am looking at one thing at a time and first thing is restoring braking first.

I think the brakes should be fixed now.

Here is what happened.
The shoes on the side not working properly where fitted wrongly. The bottom sides of the shoes where not inside the stoppers so the whole brake was not working properly not just the handbrake. This was the reson why the brakes felt there was air in the system.

Here are some other issues related to handbrake which is why I was trying to fix.

I replaced the bad wheel bearing and look inside to see if the handbrake level will touch the hub. And yes if I pull the handbrake to the top the hub will stop any further movement of the handbrake lever. So if the there is something wrong with the adjuster the handbrake can not be operated any further and the handbrake becomes ineffective.

So it appears the automatice adjuster may not be that great. What I did is to manually set it so that i set as much as I can for the drum to just fit, then the handbrake will need less work to become effective.

I hope this will work. I think also the adjuster should be adjustable without removing the drum through the bolt holes, which will make a even tighter adjusting if needed.

Also the ABS wheel bearing did not seem to fit initially, but when I measured it it appeared it has the same inside diameter as the old one. I put it in the oven for 10 minitures and then in went in easily.
