Hi guys,

I just got a 1998 mk1 1.7 turbodiesel and the brake pedal is hard when the car is started. I checked the vacuum pump and it seems ok and so does the camshaft. My next thought was:
1. Broken hose
2. Vacuum pump gasket
3. Brake servo

Also i noticed under the vacuum pump was wet with oil.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks alot :)

What do you mean by setup? Maybe i can explain to you. Thanks

You say the pedal is hard when its started, does it get softer when the engine runs?

No it remains hard all the time even when the car is started

Hi,
The servo id the large "can" between the pedal and the master cylinder. I uses vacuum /air pressure for power. If vacuum is missing or the servo is broken then the brakes still work but need a lot of effort. The only ways to tell if it is the pump or servo is to measure the vacuum or use an external vacuum pump to test the servo. The pump should "pull" a good vacuum, much more than a acuum cleaner. IT shold be hard to pull your finger off the end of a 10mm pipe with the engine running. Pump failure is more common than servo. The presence of oil could mean the seals have failed and its sucking engine oil from the camshaft area.
