Other half has a Mk1 Punto, the wipers only work on the fast setting, the other two have no effect, just happened suddenly.

Is this a problem that is known - I would be thinking of the switch but maybe it could be the motor itself, anyone any ideas?

My first thought would be the relay but this happened on my old Clio, all the wipers would do was go at the fastest speed and it turned out it was just the fuse that had blown.

NOt the fuse, well saying that it did blow the fuse when front going on fast (only speed it will do) and the back going as well. Replaced that and back to one speed on front. So the switch selects via a relay does it, where would the relay reside?

We have a 1.2 8v punto and we had the 'juddery wiper' thing which cured when we cleaned the excess grease from the wiper gearbox.Suddenly about a week ago the wipers stopped working on all but the fast setting and the occasional lurch on flick wipe. This seemed to come and go but mostly the wipers were not working at all. So off came the cover of the wiper gearbox again and we removed , carefully, the stator ( body) of the motor by removing the two screws securing it to the gearbox. The brushes were in a right mess and the motor was full of water and gunk. Then we took off the rotor ( shaft) and cleaned everything and put it all back together. The trick in getting the armature back in is to jam matches in the brush holder slots to keep the brushes retracted while the armature is going back in. It's fiddly but the whole job took only about 90 mins. Now we have happy wipers but I am sure we will have to keep checking the motor for water. Humans 1 : Wiper Motors 0
