Hello
I have this punto from 1998 elx 1.7 td
during my last trip the temperature went really high, i stoped and checked the water and it was all gone, boiled. then i saw that the fan wasnt working at all. i removed the wire that goes to the radiator fan switch and the plastic there had melted. i made a bridge for the high speed and it wasnt working, for the low speed the fan started to spin. i left that on all the time and managed to finish the trip. now i took it to a repair shop and he managed the high speed (92degree C to 97) to work if the plug is on the radiator fan switch but the low speed doesnt work (87 to 92 degree). I have found the radiator fan switch but i need to find the plug too as it has melted the plastic. Anyone knows where can i find this plug, it has 3 contacts and its round. And 1 more question, why my thermostat has 4 sensors??? can i swap it with a thermostat that has 2 sensors??? thx for the help

Hi, and welcome:)

are you sure the engine is OK - if all the water boiled away:eek:

with the plug,
try a yard of dead FIAT's , I've got a 2nd cable I use for testing the fan's ,
I plug it into the cars radiator fan, and connect the 2 x wires to a battery / 12 V source

Thx for replying
I havent done any test to the engine but till now it seems ok,:worship:, it starts ok, and idles at 800rpm and works pretty much the same. I tried at the yards with dead fiats but they tried to sell me the whole radiator with the fan switch and the wire. No way i was going to buy all that, no need for the radiator, thats why im looking for wires online but till now no luck.

to be honest i wouldn't worry about the head gasket unless you were driving for a while while it was too hot, sounds like you stopped pretty much straight away from your post. May be worth doing a compression test but the diesel is much more stout than the fire engines.

Do you get scrap yards where you can go in and remove parts yourself in Albania? Thats prob your best bet if there is. Short of that I would look on ebay, someone like Rob at PuntoSpares on UK ebay will prob be able to get one and would send it abroad i think. He rarely has mk1s anymore but i suspect the connector will be same on lots of fiats.

Good luck, oh and welcome to FF!

headgasket will pop

well the water deposit now is full and if the headgasket would have poped the water would have been black or like dirty cause it would get mixed with the oil but till now water is good. (i havent put coolant in the deposit till i fix this problem cause it might happen that the coolant/water boils again).

Hi Blu, i stopped immediately after looking at the temp going up.
There are scrap yards but they dont let you get parts by yourself,
they scrap the parts themselves and sell them.
thx for the tip,(y)
checking now at puntoparts.

You can wire the fan to a switch yourself using a relay and fuse similar to the one you use for driving lights.

Then just keep an eye on the temperature gauge and flick the switch when you need to.

Loss of water on the 1.7TD doesn't always mean head gasket. Have you checked your water pump and looked at the drive belt to see if it is at an angle compared to the other pulleys?
