Fuel Gauge Punto Mk1 1997 not working has gone on the blink a few times before and returned working. I also note when this happens the clock also goes dead and returns when the fuel gauge is working, Not worried over the clock but also note it seems to work when the ignition is off. Tried resetting the ecu without any results checked wiring on pump seems ok same for back of fuel gauge. Tks

If clock is going dead at the same time then it'll be in the instrument cluster, take the gauges out (couple of hex screws I think) and the whole thing pulls forward, the wires aren't very long so it's quite hard to get it out enough to see behind (recommend doing this from the passenger seat) and inspect the connections leading into the back

Tks Didge3 I have unclipped the fuel gauge connection and that of the fuel pump connection and connected again without any changes. I can’t find a circuit diagram for the Mk1 model but that of the Mk2. On the Mk2 model the fuel pump is directly connected to the EMU and the resistance circuit for the float goes directly to the dashboard and is fused behind the passenger glove box and there don’t seem to be any involvement of the EMU in the fuel gauge workings. But the amazing thing of this is it goes in the off for a week or two and its back working again without any intervention and once its working like all intermittent faults it’s difficult to locate. And as I stated above the clock goes on the blink with the fuel gauge and restores itself with it which should be the key to locating the fault and when it’s in this fault state the clock works till the ignition is switched on.

Was going to have a more detailed look at it today but yesterday it began to work again on its own and the clock returned to normal as well. Obviously there is a linkage between both but what? As I stated when the fuel gauge goes on the blink so does the low fuel light and the clock does not function either when the ignition switch is on and functions when the ignition is off.
