Hello,

I'm new to the forum but could not find a thread with a definitive answer, so here goes:
My horn was working very sporadically. Only when the steering wheel was turned the right way, and also some times when I didn't push the button. Of course this is very annoying and it will not pass MOT like that, so I installed an auxiliary horn button. The horn works every time when i press the button I installed, but today it also went off when I didn't use the button. Quite annoying...

I know it's because I could not find the original switch wire that goes to the steering wheel.

I took off the buttons on the steering wheel and put some electrical tape over those contacts, so that it wouldn't go off sporadically anymore (or so I thought).
Turns out I was wrong.

I do not have the wiring diagrams nor could I find them. What I discovered myself is in the picture below. The other contacts on the horn relay will go to the ground and horn respectively I assume, but I did not check this.

Any help would be appreciated,
Bob

Edit: My Punto is a petrol 60s with 58hp. This is probably important..

thanks for the answer, but I already found the wiring for the mk2 indeed.

I just don't know what wire that comes from the clockspring is the horn button wire...

yeah I know where to find those, but the problem is that even though I disconnected those, the horn just sounded while I did not press the button. So I need to know where the other end of that wire comes out of the steering wheel

Have you changed the horn ring behind the steering wheel?

Maybe part of your indicator and wiper stalks

I have not, I haven't taken off the steering wheel because I'm kinda scared of the airbag. Should I be or am I just a chicken?

I think the only thing you need to be worried about is the airbag light.

Disconnect the battery. Then take the airbag off. Chances are the pin is broken in the ring do when you turn the wheel it's touches inside sounding the horn

Allright, might try taking off the steering wheel then this weekend.

The airbag light is something to consider when putting the steering wheel back on?

Not sure where you are mate. In the uk airbag light on is an mot fail

However it may just want the code clearing after. If you lucky it will go out automatically

I'm in the Netherlands, and it is not an MOT failure here. It will be noted and advised to be repaired but it's not a failure, lucky me.

yeah don't worry about the airbag going off, just make sure the battery is disconnected and there is 100% no way it can go off. Lots of wives-tales circulating the net about how they can go off, but they need electricity to set off the charge and its just never going off without the battery connected, i promise.

Hey guys,

So I basically took the easy / haggard way out. The pin of the relay that I soldered the wire onto to go to my auxiliary switch.. yeah that pin is no longer in it's socket. The only thing connected to it is the wire I soldered onto it.

Had a good test scenario today as the horn went off when I pulled into the driveway. Take out the relay --> horn stops. Relay back in --> horn goes off.
Bend the pin so it's not connected to the original circuit anymore, put the relay back in, only the button I installed makes the horn sound :D

Honestly the fix is just so it can go through MOT, might just pull the relay out and stash it somewhere after MOT cause you don't really need a horn anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions though guys, and your fixes would probably have been better but since this works I'm going with it.

you need horn, imagine this scenario in your head

you are stationary and in a traffic jam, a BIG truck is infront and behind of your car you cannot move and as usually you are playing loud music, that big truck infront of you is on his cell phone and doesnt realize he forgot to apply handbrake and his truck is going backwards slowly squishing your car, you are yelling but cant be heard outside due to music, instinct is telling you to sound the horn but guess what?? it doesnt work

you just died

i tend to agree with flisko (calm down flisko, its a one time thing :p ) When you need a horn, you tend to really NEED a horn. Easiest solution would be to make your own simple fused circuit for it. Or just get an aftermarket horn and fit that with a switch on the dash and just completely disconnect the factory horn.

That is true guys, and it does work so I have nothing to worry about, but I won't let you down and keep it connected, even after MOT!
