Many Thanks...all clear (ish) now!!

Many Thanks...all clear (ish) now!!
GRRR. All fitted & still hesitating occasionally! Now wondering if one of the new coil packs is faulty...clutching at straws! My local garage is good, but doesn't have the diagnostics for this (early) engine. there is an (ex Fiat dealer) indie mechanic quite local, so I may have to take it to him.

Reactivating this thread!! HELP.

Still has the occasional Splutter around 2000rpm.
My local garage has not the diagnostics for this (1998) model. Can anyone recommend an indie who has the right diagnostics anywhere near Stratford upon Avon?
Plugs, leads, coil packs & crank sensor all changed. even poured in some of Wynns finest injector cleaning jollop.
Runs sweet as a nut (never understood that phrase!) apart from this annoying intermittent problem.

my next guess would be fuel pump
Strangely enough, that was my very first thought! Then I got seduced by all the electronic trickery! There is quite a lot of whining & clicking from the back end after you switch off...is that normal, I can't remember?
Where is the fuel pump? In the tank? (Thinks...where is the tank!)

you asked towards the start of the thread about the fuel filter, did you ever get that changed/checked?
don't know the cabrio myself but my hesitation problem was fixed in the end by a new coilpack and/or fuel filter, easy to do and cheap as well. good luck anyways

Thanks...Have to find the filter now!
Could still do with a decent Fiat indie in the Warwickshire area!

as far as I know no fuel filter on mk1 its in the carb apparently. I'm having similar performance issues but I'm looking at carb strip down (stepper motor) needs a clean out so I got a tin of carb cleaner £6 and see how it goes

for a kick off no punto has a carb..

all puntos, no matter what model, have an inline filter. But not all of them have the same filter.

look under the car same side as the filler, slightly forward of the filler and you should see it, pretty obvious.
I started this thread back in July last year!
Changed coils & crank sensor to no avail. Couldn't be the plugs, they were only a couple of years old. Well the hesitation & injector light kept coming on so sod the expense, new plugs it will be.
Ordered NGK's from Fleabay & they arrived promptly, but were for 8v engine! So as I had started to take the plugs out I continued & gave them a scrub with the brass wire brush. No 4 was a bit mucky, but not bad & the gaps were quite wide, so a tap to adjust the gaps by eye & back in they go.
Guess what...runs as clean as a whistle. No spluttering, hesitation, watrning lights...nothing. The replacement CORRECT plugs have arrived & one day I'll put them in!
All goes to show...DON'T FORGET THE BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS!

Reactions: saw
sorry Chris I wasn't sure if its mpi/spi so I just put carb, I will have wheel off again for another look, although since Redex it has improved. think I need a bigger engine tbh

nice, all that to find out you had bad spark plugs
Guess what? It came back!
Took it to the local Fiat dealer (who had the early diagnostics ..Grays in Warwick) and guess what PLUG ###### LEADS! I forgot that the leads on the coil packs are not plug leads...doh!
Fingers crossed I won't be back.
