Yes some people are wary of using a proper flushing oil or maybe an additive because it can dislodge really nasty crud and cause blockages and big failures.

What I recommend for intermediate cleaning is using a traditional oil for Diesel engines with its extra detergents to do a good cleaning job and lift the worst of the old muck, e.g.

Then when this has dione its work and cleaned up the worst of it, drain and replace with e.g.

This is a mild but effective flushing regime.
 
I'd probably re-torque the head down as well,

Not a good idea.
These engines use 'stretch bolts'. You torque to a low level, then turn 90 degrees, then another 90 degrees. They are designed to be used once. Once slackened, they should not be reused. Neither should they be tightened from their original position. They are likely to weaken or snap.
