Hi guys
Just after some advice on mk 1 Punto 1.2 60 sx 1999

Put her in for mot today but failed on emissions carbon monoxide content after second idle excessive, and the headlamp aim too high.

1 advisory for the front offside tyre.

But just want to know what would cause the CO to be high on fast idle only

fast idle test 1 CO 0.52 max 0.30
second fast idle test CO 0.48
natural idle test 0.35 max 0.35 but this passed

All other emissions passed, garage said could be lambda sensor or cat but just wanted to get second opinion from here before changing them.
Thanks

Most likely a knackered cat-converter

They used to give you a little print out from the machine with the readings on and you could compare the results year after year and see the Co getting worse and worse.

Always worth making sure everything else is tip top, plugs clean and gapped correctly, throttle body clean and maybe an Italian tuneup to blow out the cobwebs but if the ecu isn't showing any errors then points to the cat

Hi
Thanks for advice, car is showing no error messages from ecu and does run quite well for an old car, only has 60000 on the clock, but will check and clean and give a good run out.

Thanks

Got under car today to remove cat and lambda but if would not budge and on closer examination it looked like someone had tried to remove before with mole grips or similar.

So I took the down pipe off and the flexi bit was rusty as hell and falling apart so ordered a new 1 will fit with new sensor and see if it would pass if not new cat will be fitted, been quoted at 121.97 for an a type approved and hope it goes through.

Just another quick question, I noticed when cleaning the airbox that a pipe was missing that seemed to connect to the top of the manifold, is this important.
Thanks

If it's a type approved one that should be fine, the pikeys' won't buy the cheap ones from us because there's so little in them. The missing pipe is the hot air pickup for when the engine is cold, you probably won't notice any difference but you can get some universal heat duct off ebay if you like - it's like a silver concertina sort of thing.
