Hi guys, calling from the cinq section! I bought a Mk1 1.2 16v engine from a breakers a while back,to find the Timing belt had slipped and bent 6 valves and a crack in the head on a water way! As the timing was out there was no way I could lock the cams on the holes in the cambox, without the valves touching the pistons and forcing them. I had no other choice to get the engine apart other than to take it apart untimed,I also removed the cam pulley to change the cam seal but didnt mark it and now I realise on hindsight I should have! So now has come to the time where I have bought a new head and need to re assemble so I was wondering wether some one has had the same thing and gone a way about it or could just point me in the right direction? Thanks Guys! :)

Hi hame41.

Sorry to see you've had no replys to this,
iguess not many on here have done much 'spanner'ing..with the the 16v.

its relitivly easy to sort,
1st thing is you need some timing tool's or atleast make some,

*incase your not aware-Timing is 'MDC' -middle dead centre..not top /tdc on these.
so you time them up by dropping a tool down pots 1 and two..and going of the marker on the tool you will have both markers..level. (look on youtube.there is two video's)

id check the inlet and exhaust cams lock off if not..you will have to remove sprocket of inlet cam and set that,

*position of cam pulley dosent matter it times up off the cam shafts not the sprocket.. (leave cam pulley loose when tensioning cam belt)

there is instructions in Haynes bible.. how to make up some improvised timing tool's if you carnt get access to a set.

Just the sort of answer I was looking for! Thank you :)
When you say inlet and exhaust cam lock out what do you mean by this? The timing between the two cams? Thanks! :)

tbh you can get timing tool for these really cheap now, i did it once a la heath robinson and its so much easier with the proper tool. But if you want to make progress without what i did before i owned the proper tool was cut 2 long lengths of welding wire to exact same length and used them to check the piston heights and iirc 10mm allen key fits almost perfect in the cam locks. then as said above, slacken the cam pulley and tension up the belt so the lines on the tensioner line up, tighten the cam pulley back upand jobs done. Its actually really really easy - only thing i can't remember off top of my head 100% is if you want piston 1 or piston 2 on the up stroke when they line up, but i thing its 1 going up and 2 going down. Someone will remember or is prob in the video, i didn't watch it..

This is the kit i have, cheap as chips and does the job fine

cylinder 1 on the downstroke for timing.

You set it with 1 on it's intake cycle :)

I have the same kit, does the job.

Though getting the cam lock out is difficult and i shattered the lugs on one of my pins trying to wedge it out in a hurry, a bar in between the cambox itself and the locker gets it out much easier.
