Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

Hi,

My wife has a fiat punto 60 SX selecta its a 1996 on a "P" plate and its an automatic.

I drove the car the other day and noticed that it didn't "creep" when in drive or reverse like all other autos that I have driven. A friend suggeset adjusting the revs so it would rev a little higher and "creep" when in drive.

I tried this but to no success but now the Transmission warning light on the dash board is constantly on.

After reading other post about the expensive fiat dealers I am very reluctant to take it to them.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas on what to check? Any help please as my wife is walking around with a face like a slapped arse as she thinks her beloved little punto is destined for the scrap heap !!.

Cheers all

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

Well the warning light is definatly there. I have been advised to change the gearbox oil to see if that rectifies the problem.

Else I suppose i'll have to pay fiat there "rip off" fee to diagnosed what is wrong with it, then im sure they will say its going to cost a fortune to rectify !!!

Any one else had this sort of problem with the Transmission warning light on the dash board come on and just stay on ??

Thanks again

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

hi my wifes n plate selecta warning light pops on and off when it wants it .i changed the oil and the filter (the filter is expensive).this made no difference after a couple of years the car sometimes about once a week used to lose drive when setting off .it would also sometimes act like the clutch was slipping .any way what im, trying to say is it took almost 2 years to get to this stage and this week i have just fitted a low milage engine and box we will see how that is !!

Ok so now you know the vehicle has an electric clutch, and the light wasnt on before you tinkered How about resetting the throttle adjustment to what the horrible old fiat man set it to when you didnt have a problem. Sorry but you have basically caused the fault yourself, the gearbox ecu has seen the throttle linkage has changed position and it needs setting back to how it was. If you adjusted it on the nuts of the cables then put them back to where the thread is nice and clean. And stop tinkering

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

you have caused a conflict on the ecu as the idle of the engine is set up off the crank sensor , so all you have done is open up the throttle and now the ecu thinks theres a fault .

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

Ok,

Thanks for your reply's I did set the throttle cable back to excatly where it was as soon as my stupid attempt to put a creep on the car failed.

I have taken the car to a fiat dealer who diagnosed the gear box and was told that the Accelerator switch was reporting an open circut to the gearbox's ECU and was told that it needs replacing.

Did I cock it up when tinkering ?

Like the guy earlier in the thread I do also experiance a problem now and then with the car not pulling away when in drive until the revs are about 2 -2 2.5 thousand revs. The fiat guy said this "might" be to do with the faulty accelorator switch. Is this likly or an I being fobbed off?

Thanks again for all your time in answering my questions.

Hi there I also have a P red fiat punto 60 sx selecta auto, and ive never had a automatic car with this low engine (1.2, i used to have a 1.6 estate before) and i notice the engine being very *revvy* is this normal on this car??? I start it, put it in drive, and then i can hear it change to 2nd gear then after that the revving that i get is horrendous, and i dont know whether its just the sound of the engine or a problem? and i also dont hear it change into3rd or 4th gear after that...is that normal??? Im a bit skint right now so cant afford to take it to the garage so any advice people??? should i adjust revs? and if so how do i do this?? Thanks alot-Lorraine

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

Hi.

Are you fully aware of the driving characteristics of the CVT (Continuously-Variable-Transmission)? Namely- there are no 'gears' (in the conventional sense, apart from reverse).

It consists of two tapered 'cones' with a belt running between them (think of a mountain bike gear assembly). As the engine revs rise, the belt slides along until it reaches a point where it stabilizes. If you open the throttle gently the engine speed and road speed climb steady, but slowly together. If faster progress is needed and the throttle is opened further, the belt naturally stays in a position that gives a better ratio for acceleration (though it gives a 'slipping clutch' sensation and associated noise) until you ease off the throttle and it moves to it's 'cruising' ratio. Many new owners wrongly assume this standard characteristic to be a sign of a fault.

Faults can occur, but without driving the vehicle a diagnosis can be difficult. If possible I'd either find another Selecta to compare yours to, or if you're really concerned ask a Fiat Tech to have a test-drive (some are actually nice and friendly). If you can find one doing a free Health Check they might be able to test the gearbox operation as part of the check on roadtest if you ask.

Re: Transmission Warning Light On Dash Board

right your wrong these cars do have a creep function if you tap the throttle untill you here the throttle switch trigger(click) the car will drive and creep even thou you have not opened the throttle yet meaning still at idle

as you adjusted the throttle the box has now seen an increase in engine speed before it saw an open throttle switch hence the light and the recorded fault code

you need to adjust the throttle cable so that the switch will click before the revs climb not after or simultaneously

then have the codes cleared and it shouldn't come back

ok
