Hi everyone.

Total car dunce, never owned one before. Just bought myself a p reg 55 sx and I have a couple of questions I'm hoping you can help with.

When I bought the car the owner told me the red key was the ignition key, however having read some of the owners manual it says the red key should not be used for day to day driving and should only be used in an emergency. If the previous owner has used the red key for driving what impact will this have had? The owner gave me the normal ignition keys so I have been using those and not the red

At some point the central locking on the car must have failed, the locks on the drivers and passenger doors have been replaced, so there is a different key for the locks. Unfortunately the previous owner only had one of these keys so I have no spare for the doors, if I ever did misplace it I suppose I could get in through the boot as the ignition keys work on that. Is it possible to get a spare key cut without having a code card for the lock?

Im not sure about this but I think the car might have to high and rpm when idling and driving, the idle revs seem about 1100 which seems hight and Im having to change up gear very quickly as the revs seem to shoot up. Any ideas?

Thanks

I am having idle issues myself at the moment. It will be good if you give some more detail on your idle issue.
For example what is the idle speed when the car is stationary?
Does the idle speed vary?
Is cold idle same as hot idle speed behaviour?

 welcome to here..

As fingers says about keys, you should be able to just get some keys cut for the doors which as its different from ignition won't need coding or anything, most timpsons can do them these days. Using the red key all the time does nothing bad - you are just at risk of either losing it or it getting damaged and you need it to get a new key coded (or at least you used to, not sure if you do these days really but it will make it easier for sure if you have the red key).

Thanks very much for the replies, getting a new key cut just in case.

How would I be able to tell if the accelerator cable is too tight? Is this something I could do myself?

check if someone was playing with these 2 nuts that hold the cable

It is just those two nuts to adjust. May as well remove the rubber nipple, too (can work loose and jam up the mechanism).

You need to be able to tweak the bare bit of the cable a little without moving the throttle butterfly -- just a little slack.

yep my belowed mother was driving and this rubber **** got jammed and gas was stuck to 100%, lucky she didnt die that day

its happened to me twice... once in my 16v cinq in traffic, it was sitting at 5k rpm while stationary at the lights until i was able to pull over to sort it (got some funny looks, that car was really loud without revving at 5k!!) - and once driving Eklipze3k's seicento driving on an a-road i let off approaching a roundabout and the car just kept going - its pretty scary in teh moment before you realise how or why its happening haha.

Thanks all I've had a look at the cable and there is no slack in it at all. The rubber nipple is on so I'll take it off just to be safe.

I'm guessing I just adjust it, let the engine idle and keep adjusting till the revs are between 800-900.

adjust it till there is a touch of slack - if the idle is still a bit high that points towards another issue but one thing at a time, slacken the cable a touch and go from there.

Hi again all,

Finally had the time to have a go at it, turns out there is some slack on the cable and idle is still high.

Not sure what the next step would be to resolve this?
