hi all,
I want to build myself a unique punto, not bothered about the out side looking perfect, but under the hood its gotta be mint! obviously its gotta look reasonable though. what's the best engine to start with? I'm thinking new pistons, new cams, the lot!! In honour of my first car which is sadly no longer with us :( would it be good to start with the 1.6 block and build around it?

Lowering the compression is easy enough but you'd need a GT and a 1.6 block as turboing a n/a engine. With the loom, ecu and plumbing already in place it's a lot less faffing about.

My sporting has nearly done 63,500 miles, great engine and ropy paint. ;)

agreed, gt engine - but you could make a 1.6 GT engine, its been done a fair few times. That or get a modern t-jet engine
That excellent ancient engine over-enlarged to 1.6, is a long stroke thumper, whatever you do with it.
Whereas the FIRE can be a real gem of driver pleasure but its t-jet form has more an emissions, and a driver-blandness emphasis.
Why not a 1368 block under a mk.1 Punto 16v head, instant throttle response instead of squidgy fly-by-wire.

Panda 100hp units are about from £250

I don't think it'd be much quicker than the 90-ish bhp Punto 1.6 eight valve.

I have Punto GT rear brakes, de-locked doors and bits as well if you want to go mild custom.

The factory actually persuaded a Delta Integrale engine and running gear into a Mk1 Punto. I suspect they used a lot of the Delta floorpan.

Why they did it is something of a mystery, but it has to be the untimate Mk1 Punto.

More here. A weird and wonderful beast indeed...!

Been discussed on the Forum before, as well... -- and by fingers99 himself, of course...! :worship:

If you can find one the Fiat Coupe 16V Turbo is a shoe in. ;)

You'll have to pull the front valance off completely to get the engine in and replace it with a brace bar if you want a meaningful intercooler/radiator combination.

The extra weight up front will make the car handle like crap but 150+mph would be possible.

Area 51 Racing did a pretty good one a few years ago.

i bow to your collective knowledge :worship: okay, nooby question coming up... whats a T-jet engine? Why is it called so? and will i ultimately get more power out of a T jet than a 1.4 16v?

T Jet (T = Turbo, I guess) is a turbocharged engine which used the 1.4 16v n/a lump as a starting point. It shares almost no important components with it after FIAT made it fit for purpose. It looks the same, but virtually everything is different, stronger, etc.

Out of the crate, a T Jet will give you 130 -160 bhp. People have seen 200+ with mods.

So the Punto GT has a T jet engine? Or is that a regular, run of the mill, 1.4 16v? i mean i know its turbo but is that right?
