Hi
My speedometer sensor on the gearbox is broken, I connected the speedo cable straight to the gearbox but EML is on.

it looks like this:

When I search for a new/old sensor, I found these:

Both are without a bolt-on cap so I can't fit the speedo cable into it.
Do I need to mod something or it's just not the right part?

new one on me tbh - have never had to fix the speedo on a mk1 punto but on a cento which is also cable driven the cable just screws onto the gearbox and not in a little electrical thing.. not sure what that thing is to be honest, looking on the eper i don't see that thing. The connectors hardly look like original equipment connectors either. And i can't find that bit on the eper either.

If you look on the eper you can see a worm drive (no.10) that the cable normally sits in and teh collar screws down onto no.12 - then the bolt no.13 holds no.12 into the box. Botht he worm drive and the the thing numbered 12 have o-rings to stop oil escaping.

Just a word of warning if you go to take this apart, don't remove the screw (no.13) completly or the oil will spill out all over the place and used box oil is nasty nasty stuff.... Just undo it a little bit and wiggle the piece numbered 12 out, slides out easy once the bolt is undone enough ;)

Hi
I'm looking at this page in eper:

part number 5 in the picture.
Looks original in my car, the top of the plastic where the cable is attached to is broken but the gauge still works even without the electrical sensor.

If I remove the sensor and connect the speedo cable directly to the gearbox, the car sometimes turns off while I brake or going into turn with the clutch pressed (EML is on)

mmmmm, intriguing. So it has different part number for LHD and RHD cars, also different numbers for cars with ABS. I'm so curious as to what this thing is for now.... Can't see why a car would have both an electrical sensor and a mechanical!!

Try asking Big Mick at EuroCarCare if he can sort you one out...

Mick doesn't have one.
I took it apart today:

I don't even know how it actually works with a speedo cable connected to it.
Speedometer works but EML is on and the car sometimes turns off while I'm moving into neutral gear

I've found one last unit that was left in FIAT local dealer here:

I had to resolder the wires since the original was female connector.

Took it for a 2 hours drive.
Finally the EML turned off!! without even disconnecting the battery.
Car won't turn off now when going into stop. Happy now :)

That's the answer I got from the dealer:

Your car management system here is manufactured by GM engine as Fiat Tampra 90 (this is also the same engine).
The speed sensor sends the vehicle speed data to the engine management computer software used to improve the speed data and also different sessions of the ignition components (ignition delay, and promotion) and fuel injection.

When improper speed sensor/missing/offline control lamp lights up and the main problem is that if there is another important fault in the system engine management, you will not know it since the light is always up.
